Impact of Trauma
Discussion Topic
Top of Form
Directions:
The impact of genetics and our environment on development from a scientific perspective can provide data. This module examines scientific issues like generational trauma and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). The data is still being collected on these topics, but anecdotally, the impacts of issues of trauma can be seen in individuals’ daily lives.
Initial Post
Considering what you know about generational trauma and ACEs, think about issues in the news and other forms of media. Share a story that includes either generational trauma or ACEs. This story can be fiction or non-fiction. Identify the issue of trauma or ACE in the story and provide multiple ways development could be affected.
Response Post
Reply to a student who identified a different type of story than the one you provided. Identify and describe a developmental impact of trauma that the student had not mentioned.

The news article "Foster kids lived with molesters. No one told their parents" by Salman et al. (2020), featured on USA Today, extensively explains adverse childhood experiences. These are issues, such as neglect and abuse, which children face, especially in the home environment. ACEs may also include substance abuse by parents, living in foster homes because primary caregivers were incarcerated by the state for criminal activity, and having a mother or father with a mental illness. The news article detailed sexual abuse that fosters children underwent for many years before the state apprehended their abuser.
Salman et al. (2020) wrote that Rick Hazel, a Florida-based foster father, had sexually abused the girls in his care multiple times for many years. The abuse remained undetected because the affected children did not report it for long out of fear of losing their homes. Caseworkers also noted that many children under Hazel's care were neglected, an ACE that adversely impacts a child's development.
As a result of being exposed to sexual abuse for many years, the children under Hazel's care developed anxiety, fear, and depression (Lo Iacono et al., 2021). These mental illnesses often interfere with a child’s ability to express themselves in social settings. They can cause them to engage in self-destructive behavior as a release of the pain they experience. Some children can shut down the abuse for many years, but its impacts will resurface in adulthood (Lo Iacono et al., 2021). The children Hazel abused could develop social anxiety disorders for mistrust that the people they attach to will betray their innocence, or they could have excessive anger that could prevent them from performing their duties effectively. Overall, ACE's such as the sexual abuse the children under Hazel experienced, adversely impacts a child's growth and development.

Students,
Welcome to our final week! The term 'transgenerational trauma' is used to refer to the generally subconscious transmission of traumatic experiences to subsequent generations and to society. People in the next generation find themselves showing the symptoms of trauma without having experienced the trauma themselves.
What are some of the Signs & Symptoms of Generational Trauma? Any thoughts?
