Mobile computing is defined as the portability of computers where their services are transferred to portable devices. Mobile computing is viewed as a connection of three fundamental aspects, namely, communication, hardware, and software. The hardware is depends on portable devices such as smartphones and laptops. Software, on the other hand, is the multiple mobile applications in hardware devices such as remotely stored games, anti-virus software, and mobile browsers. Lastly, the communication aspect comprises mobile networks, data delivery, and protocols. Mobile computing is divided into two major groups, namely, vertical and horizontal applications. Horizontal applications is comprised of software that implements tasks such as web browsing, messaging, emailing, word processing, and scheduling. Vertical applications are applications that are specific to an industry and are appealing to the distinctive industry in which the application is designed for.
Communication in businesses has significantly transformed in the last few years. This is due to the combination of various tools of technology that are facilitating the automation of tasks and rendered business activities efficient and easier. Mobile computing has greatly transformed the way people communicate and the communication practices in businesses. Unlike in the horizontal applications which consist of software capable of implementing tasks like scheduling and emailing, the vertical applications are only suitable for defined industries within which they are designed for.Such know-hows have made communication immediate and have helped professionals to work in environments that are not in the office. Mobile computing has changed the communications of businesses with their customers, stakeholders, and other people. Mobile computing has enhanced the businesses’ project management systems. Through the project management system, employees do not necessarily have to be in the same location for them to share their opinions. People either in the workplace or working from other locations can develop checklists, develop goals, allocate tasks or monitor the progress of their project. (IGI Global, 2020).
Another impact of mobile computing is enhanced workplace collaboration. Mobile computing has helped institutions to connect staffs to an enhanced network. Mobile computing also facilitates teleconferencing, video calls, and digital meetings for team members from all parts of the world to participate in discussions. This has improved the business productivity. Mobile computing has also enabled optimization of business operations. They have streamlined and improved business operations, fastening business processes, and improving the quality and accuracy of these business operations. Mobile computing also helps in eliminating paperwork in a business. This is because they collect, store, and transfer information electronically. They have also removed the huge work of writing invoices and receipts manually. This enables workers to gather, evaluate, and access important business information accurately and quickly ("Csdl, 2020).
Mobile computing enables companies to acquire increased output in less time. These devices provide quick and enhanced access to data from the main information system. This enables workers to access vital data in real-time from the company at all times. Through this, technicians and field executives can complete their tasks with increased productivity, which improves the productive output of the business in minimal time. Mobile computing also facilitates reduction of cost in companies. A boost in productivity of an individual significantly decreases the need for intermediate labor, thus enabling the company to reduce on cost. Mobile computing eradicates the requirement to have multiple equipment for several functions like information retrieval and evaluation. They also reduce the selling time and extra travel. Additionally, mobile computing has enhanced better decision making in companies. This is because they facilitate on-time access to crucial data for employees and management, enabling them to have better decisions in aspects like customer services. The company managers are additionally able to make accurate tracking of stock, which enhances timely decision making avoiding surplus and out-of-stock situations (Datascope, 2020).
Mobile computing has also ensured greater accuracy in companies. Data is transferred electronically, which is quick and accurate. Electronic transfer eliminates transcription and interpretation mistakes commonly found in data entry processes done manually. Electronic transfer of data includes automated record of date and time; thus, an individual can monitor the works in progress. This ensures traceability, transparency and accountability. Mobile computing has enhanced customer relations. This is through the flexible access to data using the mobile solutions, which enables workers to accurately resolve customer queries, update customer data, and check the availability of stock and prices. Customers are also able to place their orders right from their home. This makes customers more satisfied with the services and creates loyalty to the business’s products. Faster and convenient services are always the best way to improve customer relations (IGI Global, 2020).
