Toulmin Model of Argument

Main Parts

Data: The "facts". Statistics, examples

Claim: The point. What you're arguing.

Warrants: The "because". Subjective beliefs, assumptions, reasons you think what you think. o Sometimes taken for granted o Sometimes not stated (have to read between the lines) o Come in 3 varieties: ethical, emotional, and logical

Supporting Parts

Backing: Additional data, examples, etc. Support warrants.

Qualifiers: Acknowledge claims aren't absolute (they aren't always true). Support claims.

Rebuttal: Acknowledges alternative claims that may flow from available data, BUT ALSO argues that alternative claims are wrong (or less right). Supports claims.
