Image of the Artist Essay

❑ Analytical Essay

Write an essay in which you analyze how visual artists are portrayed in film.

❑ 2 pages, double-spaced, 12pt Cambria font, 1-inch margins

You're watching the movie Pollock (2000) (Jackson Pollock)

❑ DESCRIPTION: Write a short summary of the movie plot in your own words. This should be a paragraph (about 4 sentences) and should not copy any plot synopsis found online or on the back of the DVD case.

❑ INTERPRETATION: Pay attention to how the artist is portrayed and analyze what image the movie is creating. You will interpret what message about the artist the movie is communicating. Answer these questions in your essay and do not simply provide a bullet list. This is an essay assignment.

o What is the temperament of the artist?

o What does the artist look like? What does the artist wear?

o What is the artist's creative process like? Where does the artist work?

o How does the artist interact with other people in the movie?

o How does the portrayal of the artist fit your own stereotypes of artists?

o How does the portrayal of the artist deviate from your stereotypes of artists?

o After watching the movie, what is your opinion of the artist?

o Provide SPECIFIC examples from the movie in your paper to support your analysis. DO NOT simply make factual statements. Use the facts (scenes or details from the movie) to support your interpretations about what image of the artist the movie is creating.

The essay is not a play by play of the movie (this happens in this scene, this happens in this scene, etc)

OUTCOME: What did you learn from analyzing the image of the artist and how will it affect how you view portrayals of artists in the future? This should be a paragraph (about 4 sentences).
