1. Practice: Challenge the Process

Before joining the course, you were asked to identify a real Business Issue or Challenge in the workplace that is affecting either your team/your project/your Dept. or the business.

Ask yourself, “Why does this task exist? Why is it done this way? Does this task need to be eliminated or done differently?” Try and introduce a change and share your success. (CTP)

Please complete Part B of this Business Application when answering this question.

2. Practice: Inspire a Shared Vision

Learn about a visionary leader. Capture your learning about the way the person communicated vision and enlisted others in a common vision. (Inspire a Shared Vision)

3. Practice: Encourage the Heart

Ask yourself which member of your Team best demonstrates the values and priorities of your team. Think of three ways to praise and reward him/her in the weeks ahead. Implement the recognition.

4. Practice: Model the Way

Keep track of how you spend your time. Does your time align with your values? Introduce ways to better align your time with your values.

5. Practice: Enable Others to Act

Identify a team member who is feeling powerless.  What are the specific things you will do/say this week to help them feel powerful?  What was the outcome in your doing this?  Was there any noticeable difference in your relationship or impact to the team?

6. Practice: Model the Way

Share an example of how you used your personal values to help you make a decision. How did your values affect the outcome? (Model the Way)

Business Impact Examples

The below examples may be of assistance when thinking about your impact on Page 4.

Making an Impact – Real Case 1: Gas Compliance Assessment & Reports

Business Challenge Situation

· An Aramco team completes Compliance Assessment & Reports on all nine Aramco gas plants every year.

· The team of 4 people spends about 4 hours/day on each assessment for 15 days (3 weeks)

· Therefore one plant assessment (4 people x 4 hours/day x 15 days) takes about 240 hours.

1. If one hour can be charged at US$50, what is the cost per plant assessment? US$12,000 (240 Hours x US$50)

2. If assessments are completed on Aramco’s nine gas plants, what is the total cost? US$108,000 (9 X US$12,000)

Task

A proactive employee felt the team could improve on this and set desired target of two weeks (10 days) for completion of an assessment and report.

Actions

First, the Team set a clear and achievable goal; then they identified the root causes of the time delays. After that, they brainstormed some simple solutions. They decided to bring all data to site visit and complete 80% report on site.

Results

The results were good. They have been able to meet the desired target of 10 days.

Now one plant assessment (4 people x 4 hours/day x 10 days) takes about 160 hours.

1. What is the new cost per plant assessment? US$8000 (160 Hours X US$50)

2. What is the new total cost for nine plant assessments? US$72,000 (9 X US$8,000)

One employee’s simple idea is saving company US$36,000 Yearly (US$ 108,000 – US$72,000)

Making an Impact – Real Case 2: Engine Fuel Experiments

Business Challenge Situation

· Engine experiments to evaluate new gasoline formulations were not being completed within the expected timeframe. These laboratory experiments are very sensitive and challenging, so they often needed to be re-run.

· A team of 4 people (Technicians & Scientists) spends about 8 hours/day on each experiment for 10 days.

· Therefore one experiment (4 people x 8 hours/day x 10 days) takes about 320 hours.

1. If one hour can be charged at US$50, what is the cost per experiment? US$16,000 (320 hours X US$50)

2. Experiments are completed 20 times per year, so what is the total cost? US$320,000 (20 X US$16,000)

Task

Analyze the situation to find ways to reduce the number of re-runs and therefore the timeframe.

Actions

The team firstly identified the root causes for some of re-runs. After that, they brainstormed some solutions and selected some simple solutions such as standardizing procedures as well as introducing templates.

Results

The results were good. They have been able to reduce the time for an experiment to 6.5 days.

Therefore one experiment (4 people x 8 hours/day x 6.5 days) now takes about 208 hours.

1. What is the new cost per experiment? US$10,400 (208 hours X US$50)

2. What is the new total cost for 20 experiments? US$208,000 (20 X US$10,400)

One employee’s simple idea is saving company US$112,000 Yearly (US$320,000 – US$208,000)

Making an Impact – Real Case 3: Unnecessary Risk Assessments

Business Challenge Situation

· As many as 60 -70 Risk Assessments are carried out within the company each year for various large projects. However, a review by Key Stakeholders of a number of these Risk Assessments has highlighted that a percentage (10%) were either unnecessary or failed to meet the standard requirements. This is naturally a cost to the company.

· One Risk Assessment for a large capital project may cost up to US$200,000

Task

Analyze the situation to find ways to reduce the number of unnecessary Risk Assessments as well as improve the quality of the necessary Risk Assessments.

Actions

The team firstly identified the root causes, and after that, they brainstormed some simple yet practical solutions. One simple step was to incorporate Risk Experts much earlier in the process pipeline to assess the necessity of Risk Assessments and to weed out the unnecessary ones. In addition, Key Stakeholders worked closer together.

Results

The results look good. They conservatively hope to identify and weed out a minimum two unnecessary Risk Assessments this year.

What is the estimated savings for preventing two unnecessary Risk Assessments? US$400,000 (2 reports X US$200,000)

One employee’s simple idea is potentially saving company US$400,000 Yearly (2 x US$200,000)
