Overview
Good job! By now, you are forming a picture in your mind of the challenge you will embrace in your humanitarian aid trip.
In the module Resources, you reviewed Kleinman and Benson's approach to conducting a mini ethnography with every patient in the paper "Culture, Behavior, and Health."
Based on that resource, you will outline the population's culture (ethnography) affected by and surrounding your selected health challenge.
You still haven't directly interacted with any patients at the center of your chosen scenario. However, this approach can help you anticipate the culture the population will reflect.
Through investigation of the scholarly literature, you will be able to answer the questions:
What should you know about this population's culture before you begin the trip? What should you prepare to encounter?
What cultural adaptations will you need to blend the norms and expectations of the population of your culture of origin and the culture of the population of the chosen scenario?

Prompt
Building on the prior project preparation assignments, conduct a “mini" ethnographic analysis of the specific population for your humanitarian aid trip.
For this assignment, craft a short paper substantiated by scholarly literature.
Note that you should cite at least three scholarly sources from your investigation. The evidence should not be older than five years.
To access the Shapiro Library Guide: Nursing—Graduate, go to the Start Here section of the course.
Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:
Remember the focus should be from the perspective from the selected target population from option 1 (Zambia), option 2 (specific country for West Africa), option 3 (specific country for East Asia or the Pacific), & option 4 (specific country for South America).

IHP 501 Module One: 4-2 Project Prep Ethnographic Analysis Short Paper
Ethnicity: Assess the ways in which ethnicity influences identity for the population. In other words, how does ethnicity factor into cultural conceptions of identity?
(Consider: the 10 common attributes of ethnicity:
common culture, practices, religion, physical or
racial, language, loyalty, community, social bonds,
common values, separate institutions, minority, &
immigration (Harner et al., 2020).
Stakes: Analyze the stakes of the health issue for the patients and their loved ones.
Consider factors such as social, economic –
potential job loss/main income person, poor
sanitation, health literacy, poverty, misconceptions
or misinformation about the health challenge,
increase risk of transmission, inequalities, food
shortages).
Meaning of Illness: Describe how patients conceptualize illness in this population. (Consider: How does the target population describe, perceive, understand the specific health challenge (Ebola, Covid, malnutrition, malaria)?

Social Stressors: Identify the social stresses patients may experience due to illness. Consider: biological/physical (body, genetics), environmental (climate, etc.) & psychological (coping style, type of personality, social support) stresses.
Impacts: Evaluate the potential impacts of the clinical setting on your relationship with the patient. (Consider: Will the patient travel to a neighborhood clinic? Would they consent to treatment for Covid, Ebola, malnutrition or malaria? Would they trust you as one of their healthcare providers? Is the target population receptive to others from other countries? Would they be hostile? Will it be a mobile clinic? Search & find credible, current, & scholarly articles to support your topic)
