According to Ida B. Wells-Barnett lynching mob cuts off ears, toes, and fingers strips off the flesh, and distributes portions of the body as souvenirs among the crowd. She exploded the myth that lynchings were carried out in retribution for black men' raping white women, because the overwhelming majority of sexual relationships were consensual or merely a product of fear in white imaginations. She asserted that lynching was “that last relic of barbarism and slavery”.

It represents the cool, calculating deliberation of individuals who straightforwardly declare that there is an "unwritten regulation" that legitimizes them in executing people without grievance having sworn to tell the truth, without preliminary by jury, without an open door to make guard, and without right of appeal.

VINCENT’S POST:

For this research assignment I chose the article “10 best stories from the Arabian Nights.” I chose this article because it talks about the different stories that was told. Even though some of these stories were added until the eighteenth century, they are still great stories that catches the attention of others due to fantastic adventures. For instance, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves is a tale based on Aladdin and the Magic Lamp. Ali Baba was considered to be a vagabond who sees a group of forty thieves going into a cave. The thieves said the words “Open, Sesame.” Because of what he seen; he entered the cave after the forty thieves left. Later in the story Ali Baba tells his brother about the cave with treasure, but the brother dies due to being stuck in the cave and the 40 thieves killing him. The chief and thieves attempted to kill Ali Baba but was not successful due to his servant by the name of Morgiana. Morgiana saves Ali Baba from the chief’s attacks and in return, she was rewarded with some of the stolen gold in the caves. I believe this is a great story as it caught my attention. Overall, there are many stories that were told to the king, but Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves is a story that sticks out to me as it is descriptive and lets us know how loyal Ali Baba’s servant is. The song of Roland is one of the most significant pieces of French literature from the medieval period. It is an epic poem that combines the medieval values of the cavalier's heroic deeds in battle with the Christian faith that existed in these medieval times. The central concept in this literature was meant to inspire armies in Europe and uphold the reign of Charlemagne (Kunkle, 1972). The Song of Roland mainly centers on the historical surrounding, which comprises the development of two rapidly growing kingdoms: the Umayyad dynasty and the Frankish empire (Kunkle, 1972).

The main reason that led to the discussion about the article is the result of the great deeds that commemorate the acts of a great hero in this society. This article critically reflects the pervading of the Christian culture on to old, pagan beliefs as well as the christening of the morality of heroism with a value and meaning of a Christian (Kunkle, 1972). The significant thing about this article is that it reflects his bravery with Roland since he demonstrates virtue and honor. It proves the honorable warrior he is as a person. The report reflects on the selflessness, honesty, courage, and honor that a selfless person who is a societal hero should depict the betterment of society and its values(Kunkle, 1972). For the sake of Christianity and its culture, Roland fights and stands firmly for the Charlemagne kingdom, which has a Christian background, against the Saracen Islam Empire, resulting from his passion and desire to protect the domain (Kunkle, 1972).

The Song of Roland vitally reflects on the idea of honor which is crucial, especially to the Christian community and their culture (Kunkle, 1972). Honor comprises loyalty to God and an individual's lord. These loyalties are reflected as being more essential compared to life. As a result, Roland, the main character in this article, upholds his responsibilities as a hero and thus dies a martyr.

The link posted to this article I researched Marie de France, "Lanval," Read "Lanval" and "Laustic," by Marie de France; selections from the Decameron, "The Story of Ying Ying," Courtly Love, Dante, or the Inferno or Popul Vuh.

I chose this link because it listed the five themes:

1. The Idyllic Man Paired with the Idyllic Woman. Lanval is living in Arthur’s court

2. Loyalty to King Arthur & Courtly Love. When Queen Guinevere, King Arthur’s wife tried to seduce Lanval.

3. Comedy (An Ending that Makes Us Feel Good) & the Romantic Lai. The Anthology “romance satisfy our deepest imaginative desires.

4. Disappearing Vs. Dying & Rejection of the Court and Society Lanval disappears giving an immortal quality to escape from the struggles of daily life

5. The Idea that a Pure and Fair Woman is/Must be Supernatural & The Purpose of Love. Lanval meets his lover, her beauty and adornments are priceless.

A man does not have to be celestial to be good, but a woman does. It also puts men on a pedestal.

TANGELA’S POST:

I chose the article "Yüan Chen and ‘The Story of Ying-Ying'” by James Hightower. This article helped me understand “The Story of Ying-Ying” better. I learned that is a novel from the Tang dynasty. The Tale of the Marvelous was a literary form that attracted the attention of many writers during the Tang dynasty. The Tang dynasty was full of romance. In “The Story of Ying-Ying”, Zhang was a poor scholar who fell in love with Yingying. Yingying was an aristocratic woman. She was from a somehow noble and wealthy family. Zhang was a shy person, but he wanted to steal someone’s heart. He fell in love with Yingying at first sight. Initially, Zhang did not succeed in pursuing Yingying. However, he succeeded after some time. Zhang used to meet Yingying at night. 

“The Story of Ying-Ying” was sad because Zhang had to leave Yingying. Zhang and Yingying had to end their relationship. They both went separate ways and found new spouses at the end of the story. Zhang had to inform Yingying that she should be fully devoted to her husband. Zhang and Yingying’s love story started well, but it ended badly. Yingying and Zhang spent several months together before they broke up. Zhang pursued Yingying’s love, but he abandoned her after he was bored. Zhang’s relationship was conflicted between duty and love. “The Story of Ying-Ying” informed the readers that they should pursue their professional careers instead of love. Zhang prioritized his job and went to the capital to take the examination. “The Story of Ying-Ying” explored the tragedy of love and separation between Yingying and Zhang.
