INTRODUCATION TO INTERIOR DESGIN ID101 Ms.Shima AlDhaheri

Lec.2.2 Contents : • Design Process • Design Map

Three major components of the design process 1. Analyses 2. Development 3. Implementation

Identification This is the stage where the needs of the client are taken and transformed into a workable, practical and aesthetic

design solution. It is where ideas are generated and given life. The design idea in this stage where it become an

understandable entity with defined parameters.

A large part of the designer’s concern lies in identifying the project’s constraints- the framework within which the

solution must operate - which shroud include environmentally sustainable practices.

When identifying the constraints of a design problem, there are

three major , largely overlapping areas. Constraints are

determined by the needs of the end user, designer and

fabricator ( Contractor ).

Identification Key Concepts:

1. A designer’s main concerns are solving problems and making decisions

2. Design depends on recognizing and working within constraints

3. Sustainable Practices and protection of the environment are concerns designer can not ignore

4. Designer Must be aware of the larger and often unintentional consequences of their design decisions

Development

Does the creation of design admit constraints ?

Designer must have the ability to recognize all project constraints, is one of the effective keys to the design problem. Constraints can

be price , size , durability , site conditions or simply the client doesn’t like a part or your whole design idea.

Being open to change is one of the best qualities a designer can have. It is by being open and seeing where the

development process leads that unique breakthroughs in the design can be made.

Development

End User Constraints

Human-Centered Design

Taking account of ergonomic needs, the designer will seek to create a balanced and effective furniture layout that

meets the functional needs of the user.

Ergonomic design is the art and science of working with human scale. It is a way of considering design options to

ensure people’s capabilities and physical limitations.

Development

End User Constraints

Human-Centered Design

• Functionality and form Chicago architect Louis Sullivan wrote, “Form follows function”

1. Relationship between body and space is fundamental in space design.

2. The rigidity of each architectural or interior program has been forced to be more flexible amalgamation of diverse behaviors.

Development

Ear-Chair

Studio Makkink & Bey bv/The Netherland

• The ear was established to create privacy or define space and are-rest which form a small table .

• The design was created with three different length for the chair ears to make different combinations with various amount of chairs.

End User Constraints

Human-Centered Design

During this stage, many different strands of the

finished design will be coming together. Space

planning will be a major priority.

End User Constraints

Human-Centered Design

• Safety Designer must be aware of the standards and laws governing materials, dimensions , electricity, plumping and

construction.. etc.

Development

The design process involves translating a set of needs ( spaces, relationships ,and desired qualities) into

functional plans that synthesize all those needs successfully.

Good space planning is informed by good understanding of both the programmatic requirements of the

project and the existing context.

Types of illustrations PRELIMINARY used in the identification phase ( Primary space planning ):

• Adjacency / Dubble Diagram • Zoning • Adjacency matrix • Circulation diagram

Development

Development

1. Adjacency / Bubble diagram

Bubble diagram it a tool used extensively, to help designer solve design problems quickly and effectively .

Example of required spaces for a restaurant project. The project’s designer used adjacency and bubble diagram to

understand the parts and their relationships, and formulate the being of a space plan.

These diagrams are often done independent of the context ( the project site and footprint )

2. Zoning Diagrams

Going help the designer to divide the

space into Public , Private and Semi-

private spaces.

Development

3. Adjacency Matrix

It’s a wildly used technique for organizing information over verity of factors.

This type of diagrams are usually used in complex projects with many spaces and indicates the relationships between the parts. It serves as a reference

throughout the design process. A basic matrix diagram normally stresses just the desired degree of adjacency better project spaces. However ,

additional informations can be added like sure footage and other programmatic information. These informations can includes the principle function of

spaces, the population using a space, the furniture and equipment in a space, and environmental concerns.

Adjacencies matrix does not suggest layouts, it simply does its job as a reference and help the designer to set priorities.

Development

4. Circulation Diagrams / Grid

Creating a circulation system is one of the most

effective form shaper in a project.

Development

Identifications By the end of this phase, designer should be able to formulate a cohesive project brief . The designer must answer the following questions ;

1. What will you design ?

Describing the physical product as succinctly as you can

2. What is its nature?

Describing it function and the components of the design : materials, colors , mechanics

3. Who is it for?

Describing the end user and the environment to which he/she belongs ( Type, and lifestyle)

4. Why it is needed?

Describing the problem that requires this design as a solution

5. What are the benefits of it (Goals/objectives)?

Describing the benefits this design will bring. This should answer to the problem posed in the previous question

6. Why is this interesting ?

Explaining why this project is interesting to you and how could be interesting to a client

7. How will you proceed?

Explain how you will proceed to begin the design process. What will you do next?

Identifications Assignment 2

Create a project brief of for a product of your choice. It can be furniture ,or a space
