Research Questions
Do players in World of Warcraft respond positively or negatively they see another player’s avatar dancing?
In what ways do they respond?
Independent variable: Avatar using the dance emote
Dependent variable: Other players’ responses to the dance emote
Hypothesis: They will respond positively by joining in and dancing together!
-quantitative
-IV: my avatar dancing
-DV: How other players respond
-hypothesis: they will respond positively
2
So What?
Players use in-game emotes to convey an emotion or thought with each other
By tracking how other players respond to these emotes, we can get a better understanding of their current mindset, in-game social norms, etc.
We can look for patterns in how players respond (ex. positive responses are usually conveyed in emotes, while negative responses are usually conveyed in attacks)
-This is where I describe why this is an important question to answer
-can tell us about the individuals, about the social norms in WoW
-We’ll know if we should keep dancing or if it’s dangerous to dance in public

Data Collection Method
Position avatar in the middle of well-populated area (Thunder Bluff)
Standing still, use dance emote for one (1) hour
Track other player’s responses
If attacked: Respawn, then return to same position and resume dancing
Repeat once a day (12pm-1pm) for a week
Remember, try to be as detailed as possible! You want your method to account for any outside variables that may affect your data
-This is a very broad procedure
-Make sure to list the area you choose to stand in, the time you do it at (if important), etc.
-try to be consistent about time, place, all these things can affect the responses you get
4
Data Analysis Method
Categorize the responses to dancing
Positive reaction: started dancing, laughed, said “hi”
negative reaction: attacked, said something rude in chat
Neutral reaction: asked to trade, asked for directions, etc.
Other
Find averages for each response
-state the analysis you’ll do on the data
-how are you going to group the responses you get?
-How are you going to compare those groups of data?
5
Findings Summary
100 players responded (you don’t need this many!)
50 (50%) responded positively
40 of those 50 (80%) players responded by dancing
25 (25%) responded negatively
15 (15%) responded in a neutral way
10 (10%) responded in other ways
The majority of participants responded positively
-You definitely don’t need 100

Data Visualization
Fig. 1: Number of participant responses per category
Fig. 2: Average number of responses per category
It’s good to include a caption that describes what the data in each visualization shows

Conclusions
The majority of players responded to the dancing emote positively Clearly state the results of your study.
Evidence supported the hypothesis
This result suggests that WoW players most often reciprocate positive actions with positive actions and are having fun playing and interacting with others Then discuss what those results say about WoW as a whole. Why do your results matter?
Or they just love to dance
However, a large portion also responded negatively
Future research should look for possible patterns in how different races/classes/levels respond to the dance emote Future research is something you can add on to your conclusion. Think of new project ideas that can be based on your findings from the current study.
Limitations
All testing was done in only one area of the map; other cities may produce different results
All testing was done at 3am; maybe late-night players respond more positively than those who play at other times (please don’t only play at 3am)
Sample size was too small (100 participants is actually a great sample size. But you probably won’t have 100, so this will probably be one of your limitations)
