Rhetorical Analysis
Rhetoric Dr. Mike Ristich
Rhetoric
Rhetoric is a method.
It gives us a way to analyze
how others use language.
It also gives us way to produce
effective uses of language.
Rhetoric
As a method,
rhetoric can be
divided into two parts:
S.W.A.P.
+
R.A.I.D.S.
S.W.A.P.
Subject
What is the piece about?
What are we learning about?
Writer
Who is the author?
Are they credible? Why (not)?
Audience
Purpose
To whom is the piece aimed?
What do they expect, understand, know, etc.?
Why is the author writing the piece?
To entertain, to inform, to persuade, to express?
R.A.I.D.S
Revision
What does the author want to change in the audience?
Arrangement
How is the entire piece arranged?
Invention
Delivery
What sources are being to used to invent the piece of writing? Surveys? Expertise? Audience’s emotions?
What is the tone/feel of the piece/writing?
Style
How/what can we change our writing for the better?
How are the paragraphs/evidence arranged?
What are the resources the author is drawing upon?
How is the audience receiving the piece/writing?
What genre is the piece/writing?
Is it funny? Academic? Etc.?
Rhetoric is Recursive
As a method, rhetoric
is recursive.
If one element changes, the
other elements might
change, too.
For example…
Examples of Recursivity
SWAP: Different
audiences might mean
different purposes.
RAIDS: A different style
might need new
sources of invention.
And…
The relationship
Between S.W.A.P.
And R.A.I.D.S.
is also recursive.
Understanding S.W.A.P.
help us understand R.A.I.D.S.
and vice versa.
So…
These nine elements are interconnected.
You cannot isolate one without thinking about the others.

So…
S.W.A.P and R.A.I.D.S. is a way of thinking about rhetoric, which is a method for analyzing how we/other use language at certain places and times to achieve certain purpose and solve certain problems.
Feedback from our peers and audiences is crucial, because it allows us to understand more fully the rhetorical situation and compose effective responses to it!
Rhetoric is everywhere! It’s everything (which is why we’re here)!
