Re:Topic 7 DQ 2

The outcome evaluation step of EBP implementation is used to determine the effectiveness of the implementation. Outcome measures may be physiologic, psychosocial, or functional improvement (University of Massachusetts Medical School, 2017). The data analyzed may be qualitative or quantitative feedback (Spring, Ferguson, Pender, & Starin, n.d.). For my evidence based project the ultimate way to measure effectiveness of an early mobility protocol would be to gather data on ICU patient’s length of hospital stay before and after implementation. In regards to evaluating the change in practice I would need to have data regarding the number of patients involved in early mobility, within 72 hours of ICU admission or transfer, before and after implementation of the protocol. This would tell me if my EBP implementation increased the number of patients participating in mobility such as range of motion exercises, out of bed activities, or physical therapy. Another aspect that would be of interest to measure is the attitudes of the nurses towards early mobility. A survey that addresses perceived barriers to early mobility of ICU patients could be handed out before, 1 month after, and 6 months after implementation to see how the barriers have been overcome. This would be assessed using a Likert scale and comparing the results at different intervals. In order to successfully implement an early mobility protocol I think there are 2 major pieces, the patients and the nurses. If the nurses are not comfortable mobilizing their patients the success of the program will be limited, so I think it is important to look at both aspects.
