Identify and analyze two reasons why Trump might be pursuing hard over soft power

Hard power is defined as the decision of a government to implement the use of economic and military means to direct or influence other political structures in a country. Although Tthis form of power is most aggressive and is grounded on coercion,. This is however it is different from brute force., like According to Schelling, 1976 notes military power can exterminate the enemy on account of its strength; however, the power to hurt is more potent as it is coercive and threatening in nature, and can be used effectively by the victor to make the vanquished yield completely 1976).. Trump, in his first term, has been seen to deviated from the mode of governance that was earlier practiced. In a marked shift from his predecessors, the policies of the Trump administration are directed towards from his predecessors. The main aim of Trump’s administration is to cut curtailing on foreign aid, and environmental conservations but increase spending boost on defense and law enforcement bodies. Comment by Author: You must set the terms in context as you will be referring to this in the course of your discussion. Comment by Author: Odd and incorrect phrase. Notice how the sentences have been paraphrased. Comment by Author: This word is most suited for the informal usage of the language.

One of the reasons Trump might be pursuing hard power over soft power is his intention of remaining a superpower on the strength of the nation’s enviable military might. the desire to maintain a world-class military and to remain at the top. To achieve this, he must exercise the hard power which aligns with his manifesto, namely, to make America great again. This, according to Trump’s thinking will make America remain an active leader in the world and direct the course of international events in keeping with U.S. interests. order in the world as a whole. Since this requires a substantial amount of funding, Trump’s administration came up with a hard power budget to finance this strategy. You must only discuss and elaborate on the topic sentence of this paragraph.

Realizing the above aims requires a substantial amount of funding, and the Trump administration has formulated a hard-powered budget to finance this strategy. The budget, in its entirety, has directed the highest percentage of funds to military funding and enforcing the law. Foreign aid has been drastically reduced, with the aim of focusing on domestic programs. Trump dream is to have the best and latest technological weapons and arms most excellent military equipment in the world. It is, therefore, increasingly allocating budgetary provisions to fund state of the art From planes, ships, missiles and other armours. On this, there was still a supplemental budget proposal that sought to construct a wall on the southern border. Comment by Author: The topic sentence indicates that this paragraph is about budgetary provisions related to defense spending . Comment by Author: The superlative word cannot be used here; ‘excellent’’ itself means extremely good or outstanding. Comment by Author: Vague and unclear sentence.

The Ssecond reason is the need to enforce the law. Law is the means by which all bodies in a country work through. Without legislation, any country would be in turmoil. This has been seen in many other countries, where the law is not followed, its effects have been devastating, (Sutter, 2017). Hard power cannot be successful without proper law enforcement structures. This could, therefore, be one of the reasons Trump is pushing in for hard power. Comment by Author: Careless mistake; no need for capitalization.

Identify and analyze two reasons why President Xi might be increasingly investing in soft power

China, in the recent past, has turned out to be a powerful international actor and also termed as the second largest economy. In contrast to the United States, China has decided to follow the soft power route rather than hard power. However, China has significantly invested in its military capabilities. One of the main footstones that China stands on today is a champion on globalization and economic integration among the nations of the world, (Nye, 2005). There are two primary reasons why China is increasingly investing in Soft power, one is to improve its international attractiveness, while the second is to exercise influence over other nations of the world.

On to the first point, increasing a country’s attractiveness requires to put a lot of strategies that align with the idea. Investing in soft power would work perfectly. For a long period of time , China has been putting an effort that has improved her reputation all over the world. Beijing, in the recent past, has developed a robust international network, where it has established cultural centers all over the world. China has been focused on promoting its values, language, culture, and traditions with the sole aim of enhancing its image. However, the country is yet to see its returns on the investments it has made.

Secondly, another reason I feel might be pushing China to invest in soft power increasingly is its desire to exert influence on other countries. China is doing this through aid programs that it has mostly centered on developing countries especially in Africa. China is also concentrating on concessional loans , provision of Health care , agriculture and good governance. Through this, China is slowly but surely gaining influence on many nations of the world.

Which country is likely to gain more influence internationally as a result of their

Investments in different forms of power, and why? Please support your answer with

As much evidence as possible.

In comparison to the two types of power, China is more likely to gain more international influence. This is because soft power seeks to create a more coherent relationship with other nations compared to hard power. According to the Chinese President, Xi Jinxing , “There is need to increase China’s soft power, telling good stories about China, and communicating China’s message in a better way .” With this, the country is slowly but surely increasing its attractiveness globally and also influencing other nations.

The soft power tools that China has instituted are seen to be bearing instruments. These include educational exchanges, economic integration, and international media, among others. However, some have questioned the means through which some argue that they have been conveyed in unofficial channels, (Nye, 20120. Despite this, the strategies the country is taking are leading in the right direction. I, therefore, believe that China is more likely to gain more influence in the face of the world compared to America with its hard power policy.
