CREATIVE ASSIGNMENT While it is important to understand the principles of design and the vocabulary terms, it is also important to be able to learn how to see these ideas as they exist in the everyday world. You do not have to go to an art museum to see things that might illustrate design ideas like balance, contrast or rhythm. Almost everything in our world is designed by an art professional. Fashion designers design your clothes and shoes, architects design the buildings where you live, work and go to school, industrial designers design your phones and cars and graphic designers design everything you come across in print and on the web. These design professionals are very aware of the ideas discussed in the first part of this course: the elements and principles of design. Now it is your turn. For this assignment, you will take pictures that illustrate the design principles listed below. You may use a small digital camera or a cell phone to take pictures that demonstrate the design principles listed. You may use pictures that you have taken (already in your photo library), but you should use your own images. If you do not have a device that allows you to take and send photos, then please contact me individually to explain. Please try to use images (smaller than 500 kilobytes {less than 500 kb}). After you have taken your pictures, you insert them into a Word Document or PDF. You should label them in the order of the list below (for example: Image 1, Linear Perspective). Below the image you will need to write a brief description of why you think the picture is a good example of the design element/principle. Your description for each image should be 3-5 sentences about why that image illustrates the design principle you have matched it to. This is not the place to just say you ‘love’ something, that it is ‘neat’ or ‘cool’, rather to describe how it demonstrates the specific design principles possibly using vocabulary from Part 1 of the course. The file you turn in should be one document, where you have each image inserted, and labeled, and then write your description below it. This document should be a Word Document or PDF. EXAMPLES: Pattern.jpg Image 3, Pattern, The dish drying mat has a clear pattern that is made up of one repeated motif. This pattern causes the drying mat to appear more complex and visually interesting than if it was a solid gray color. However, the overall simplicity of the pattern keeps the object looking neatly organized and easily understood. Texture.jpg Image 6, Texture, There is a strong contrast between the textures of the flowers and the pearls, which bring the concept of texture to the forefront of the viewer's experience with the photograph. The pearls refer to a smooth, sleek, uniform texture. The ruffled petals of the carnation flowers, while calling to mind soft flowers, suggest that you would feel an immensely more varied surface if you ran your fingertips across them. Value Contrast.jpg Image 9, Value Contrast, The lights that illuminate the decorative pumpkin sculpture contrast strongly with the shadowy environment in which it sits. The outer edges of the composition disappear into darkness, meanwhile the lightbulbs inside the pumpkin almost appear white in their brightness. This strong contrast between the lights and darks helps call attention to the pumpkin above all else, and the idea of light or illumination is clearly understood by the viewer. DESIGN PRINCIPLES You need to look for one example for each term. The finished assignment should have 10 images. Be sure to include a clear description in your Image List to tell me why the image you have chosen is a good example of the design principle you are illustrating.
