TASK(S) READ + ANNOTATE + RESPOND Read Kate Chopin’s
“The Story if an Hour” and Alice Walker’s “The Flowers” (these two short stories were handed out in class, but they can also be found under Content on eLearn). Annotate (at least) twenty aspects of each story (for a total of forty). Some of the possibilities include: o denotative language: words used simply for their dictionary definitions o connotative language: words used in order to create an emotional effect o figurative language: symbolism, metaphor, simile, personification, etc. o sound devices: onomatopoeia, alliteration, etc. o special language: references to time, place, culture, movement, color, emotions, etc. o binaries: rich/poor, day/night, good/evil, safety/danger, nature/civilization, boy/girl, etc. o story/narrative elements: characters, settings, plot, etc. Write a 2 page personal response to the following prompt: o What are (at least) ten ways that the “The Story of an Hour” and “The Flowers” are similar? Ten ways they are different?
