Photography and staging

Photography is one of the newer art forms and it is used in almost everywhere is this day and age such as newspapers, magazines and commercials. but not all photographs are considered art.

Technology evolves and improves very rapidly every day and now it has become easier than ever to take a picture, but although it is easy to take pictures and pretty much anyone is able to do it, not all pictures are considered art. For photographs to be considered art they have to have artistic reasons behind them and have to be taken with the intention of them being artistic and could have a story represented in them.

In the documentary (Brief Encounters) it shows that the photographer took a long time staging the photograph and making sure everything is in the right place and position which is very important so he could take the photo in the perfect conditions and make the photo look as he imagined it to be. The reason behind that is that unlike movies, photos are frozen, so the photo has to be perfect and the photographer must pay attention to every small detail. Also photographers take multiple pictures of the same setting in order to edit it using Photoshop to make the pictures as perfect as possible by using the different pictures he took and taking the best part out of each picture and putting it all in one .

Something special about pictures is that they could reflect the state of mind of the photographer and it shows when you look at photographs taken by the same photographer in different times, you might notice that in some pictures they are brighter and in others they are darker and more gothic which could represent a time where the photographer was feeling sad or angry

Some might argue that photography doesn’t require as much skill as other art forms such as painting because the quality of the photographs taken is highly dependent on the quality of the camera that is used, while it is true that the quality of the photograph would improve by improving the camera, photography also requires skill to make a photo look good and represent what the photographer wants to represent also photography is objective in a way that painting isn’t.

As mentioned in the reading (Photography by Wilson) that photographs are meant to capture something momentary about the subject, such as how they looked in a particular moment or how the setting around them gave a sense of understanding of what their story might me.

In conclusion I think that photography is one of the most impressive art forms as it represents a lot of details and mystery in just one frame and because anyone could take a picture but not everyone could make a picture art.
