HW3.docx

In this third project milestone, you will learn techniques for rigorously analyzing qualitative data. You will apply this to analyze the interview that you conducted at the end of the last assignment. This assignment should be done individually.

Readings and Resources:

· Transcribing: Finally, an easy, quick way to transcribe audio, for free , Quartz, Leah Fessler, Trint (automated transcription, but I don’t have a sense for how high-quality it is)

· Step-by-step instructions and example for TIM 158 qualitative coding

· The Coding Manual for Qualitative Researchers , Johnny Saldana

Requirements:

1. Transcribe the interview, then skim through and annotate your transcript (individual). If you have not already, transcribe the interview you conducted in homework #2. Annotate the transcript with attribute codes, e.g. participant demographics or other potential factors of interest for analysis. Quickly skim through the transcript and section it off into major topic areas using holistic codes. Use Google Docs for your transcript. You can copy the example in Step 1 in the step-by-step instructions as a template.

0. Make one detailed pass through the transcript to code characters and setting (individual).

Use the Google Docs comment functionality to annotate the transcript with Descriptive (D) and Process (P) codes. This helps to capture the setting. Only code the interviewee responses to make sure that you’re not just coding leading questions, and use In Vivo codes. Then organize your codes, and use codeweaving to write short analytic memos that describe the various characters and settings discussed in the interviews. You can copy the example in Steps 2-3 of the step-by-step instructions as a template.

· Descriptive codes describe the things being talked about. Process codes describe the actions going on and should use gerunds whenever possible (e.g. -ing words). Make sure to also mark any quotes that are particularly salient, illustrative, or evocative,

· Organize all your descriptive and process codes into a list organized by the section headers. Include quotes associated with codes,

· When codeweaving, all of the codes should be used in at least one memo, and the memos should minimize the use of words that are not codes. All codes should be underlined within the memos and quotes should be italicized.

0. Make a second detailed pass through the transcript to code values and experience (individual).

Create a copy of the annotated transcript from before and make a second pass through it, this time annotating it with Values (V), Attitudes (A), Beliefs (B), Emotions (E), and Judgments (positive: J+, negative: J-). Only code interviewee responses, and use In Vivo codes  (written with “quotation marks”) whenever possible to ground your codes in the user’s own words. Then organize your codes, and use codeweaving to write short analytic memos that give a richer depiction of the various characters and their experiences. You can copy the example in Steps 4-5 of the step-by-step instructions as a template.

· Value codes describe the importance we attribute to things. Attitude codes describe the way we think and feel about things. Belief codes describe what we accept as true including personal knowledge, experiences, opinions, prejudices, morals. Emotion codes describe feelings. Judgment codes describe our evaluation of things. Make sure to also mark any quotes that are particularly salient, illustrative, or evocative,

· Organize all the values, attitudes, and beliefs codes together by characters (if there are more than one), and codeweave these together (adding in descriptive and process codes as needed) to give richer descriptions of the characters in short memos,

· Organize the emotions and judgment codes together by section headers, and codeweave cohesive groups of codes together (adding in descriptive and process codes as needed) to give richer descriptions of their experiences.

0. Organize your codes to define categories and infer segments and themes (individual).

Use code mapping to organize the entire set of codes into categories and subcategories in two sections: persona/segments and discovery/experience. All codes should be used once, except descriptive/process codes which can be duplicated across the two maps as needed. Then write memos reflecting on segments and themes. You can copy the example in Steps 6-7 of the step-by-step instructions as a template.

· The persona/segments code mapping should use the values, attitudes, belief codes along with any relevant descriptive/process codes. Categories here represent groups the individual belongs to or attributes that characterize them.

· The discovery/experience code mapping should use the emotions, judgments, and versus codes along with any relevant descriptive/process codes. Categories here represent different aspects of the individual’s experience in discovery or using the product.

· You should write one memo reflecting on notable segments and themes reflected in insights from the individual and with 2-3 illustrative quotes. Then write a memo for each segment listing hypotheses, ideas and questions.

INTRODUCTORY

[I: I'm hello my name is Zhaowei and this is my partner Mars, Kevin, and Daniel were doing an experimental prototype interview project about problems of finding for University students. And we want to figure out whether you're having this same trouble same problems or not. Thank you for becoming one of our participants. so what is your name?]

my name is Alexan Comment by zhaowei gu: D: "Alexan Chan"

[I: Alexan? Hi, nice you meet you Alexan, and what field are you studying in?]

I'm currently a senior at business management economics Comment by zhaowei gu: D: "BUSINESS MANAGEMENT ECONOMICS"

BACKGROUND STUDIE

[I: Senior at business management economics. That’s is a very hard major too. what's your education background do you have any maybe your parent, what about your parent does your parent also was a college student?]

My parent don't go to college they are in HongKong right now they have a restaurant, a dim sum. Right now I’m here at united state my self and they don’t have a college education but for me and my older brother, we do. He is already graduated and I'm still in college but I’m about to graduate in a few months. Comment by zhaowei gu: D: "COLLEGE" - "NO COLLEGE DEGREE" Comment by zhaowei gu: E: "MYSELF" Comment by zhaowei gu: D: "COLLEGE" - "UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA SANTA CRUZ

[I: Oh, that's very nice. So what field is your older brother studied in?]

My older brother is studied in “communication” at Berkeley.

[I: Ok, just making sure that you are also a UCSC (University of California Santa Cruz) students right? Are you studying in UCSC?]

Yea! Comment by zhaowei gu: A: HE IS A UCSC STUDENT

[I: Ok, me too. And what is your last name? I didn’t get your last name earlier.]

My… I’m Alexan Chan ‘CHAN’

[I: Ok, thank you very much.]

[I: So you are like a first-generation college student, right?]

Yea, basically. Comment by zhaowei gu: A: HE IS A FIRST GENERATION STUDENT

COLLECTIVELY: DISCOVERING & EXPLORING

[I: Do you think that is going to be harder for you or easier for you or you think it didn't make any difference?]

I think to compare to other first-generation students, I'm a little bit easier because I do come here In my childhood to live with my aunt. A lot during my when I was five or six years old, I come here every summer to go to summer school so that is why, I’m English is a lot easier for me, comparing to other first-generation students. But in terms of finding a career or looking for an opportunity, I do not have any background to help me like other parents would. Maybe like connections with other companies, I would help me to get an interview faster Or now I'm just doing everything on Linkedin. [I: Yea? Do you have any troubles with a Linkedin Maybe? Finding jobs, in general, Is that a big trouble for you?]

Linkedin it's all the way great platform It's sometimes not as easy as what people would think. You submit like 200 application and you only have two interviews It is a struggling process For everyone to go through You can fight a lot. Ok sorry, I just got a call

[I: It's ok no problem]

I was talking about Linkedin, right? I submit it like 200 application last month and I got two interviews And it's hard to even get to the second phase, So I do not know what is wrong with the process of linkedin Or it's just my portfolio is not strong enough. I feel like there might be Improvement how career searching perhaps to be. COLLECTIVELY: UNIVERSITY EXPERIENCE

[I: So yes it's hard but did you get any help from your University do you think that they help you by any chance ]

Yea, The career fairs I do go to the career centre. Find the advisors for help, and they do give me good advice sometimes. But only preparing you for like the mental process They Don't Really prepare you for they don't release physically help you searching for a job and they always will tell me okay you can always go do this go do that to increase your resume strength. But I feel like no matter how I follow they're for step what they have told me to it's still really hard for me to really be successful and the career finding part I'm just applying to whatever company I see that is related to my career right now, I have already give-up for those big companies that I previously wanted to go to. [I: It's hard. So from what I understand you think that maybe the university resource didn’t really help you in terms of finding jobs right?]

Yes, so what they do is they do tell me that oh maybe you can increase the go do some such as club activities and get involved and get some sports in my resume. But those are really just kind of increasing my strength by a little bit if you still feel like the most important as the GPA and once you have the GPA you can easily to get an interview and send a purpose I don't think that the advisor really help me I can just Google all these advice from the internet myself so like a few times I just never actually start to the risers anymore Comment by zhaowei gu: A: UNIVERSITY DID NOT REALLY HELP YOU Comment by zhaowei gu: D: "GPA" Comment by zhaowei gu: D: "GOOGLE" Comment by zhaowei gu: DP: "GOOGLE" - "MYSELF"

COLLECTIVELY: OBSERVING IDEA

[I: Okay, do you think maybe more hands-on help will help you better will help students better prepare for their Career?]

[I: like advisor I mean you know major advising office they help you to pick your courses but what if they also help you to let you understand your career path and help you to understand better about your major about what you can do and help you a bit on your career finding process do you think that would be a big help for the major advisors to do?]

Yea, I do you think of right now I'm from the recalling I think the advisors are just reacted to the students and they are just answering the students need and I feel like they could be more proactive by practice I think they can go out not necessarily need the advisory but they can have some actual career find any person that go out to promote the UC Santa Cruz students if we can promote UC Santa Cruz students to some companies and they will actually give some opportunity maybe internship, Some kind of like job slots for us, so some of our students could go there. Straight to their I'm there obviously could have a requirement then we can actually be the HR for this company as long as we build a good relationship with a company's so I think that The advisers that the career advisors in the career center they can build a system like this where people would just go out, be the connection of the students and the company Not just by simply just giving us some advice. COLLECTIVELY: EXPAND IDEA

[I: very good suggestion thank you very much, that is a very smart suggestion I really liked it. do you think you prefer more like website help or online platform help or you will you prefer more physically face to face help. In order to sees for resources, or do you think in a combination of two. ]

For me, I’m a little bit lazy so I would personally prefer that I can do it online but I do know a lot of people that enjoy the face-to-face process so I think we should keep you posted wherever everyone has a chance. There is a system online and that's really useful and I think about people use it but a lot of problems is hard to explain online and face-to-face will help. Comment by zhaowei gu: E Comment by zhaowei gu: A: ONLINE PLATFORM Comment by zhaowei gu: J+

[I: Oh, so you think a combination of two would be a good idea to offer those resources the way you just talk about. Yeah great advice and it's very nice talking to you Alexan.]

Thank you Zhaowei!

[I: It's nice to have you here, and thank you for your time.]

Thank you

Code weaving the setting:

Alexan first-generation college students having a habit of attending summer school studies business management economics major at University of California Santa Cruz.

April 13, 2019

Code weaving discovery:

As a first-generation college student Alexan find college is easier than other, and his English is also easier and finding a career and looking for an opportunity he does not have enough help (“But in terms of finding a career or looking for an opportunity, I do not have any background to help me like other parents would.”). He does not have enough connection.

Code weaving the experience:

Career fair only helps with the mental process only, but college event does not help that much on searching for a job. It did not prepare you. It only teaches how to strength resume, and but he could google by himself, if the advisor could promote UCSC students to bring opportunity and internships, they could be HR for students.

MY WORK(work on this):

The interview was conducted by Shen Cheng who was the interview and Alan Zhou who is the interviewee. Relevant factors that led to the interview was the lack of knowledge of self-conduct during an interview.

Introductory

Shen: This is Shane Jen I’m going to interview with Alan Jones. interview what questions do you think you will care about? Comment by george kamau: P: Conducting the interview

Zhou: For these questions so fast of course, if I was the interviewer, I will first pay the attention to your previous experience. It is important because it proves your ability for many things. The first one is the stability of how you do your job.  how well you perform leadership relationships how you manage the relationship with your manager and boss. Even though you have the ability to something but you're not willing to participate in something like group work you may not have good relations with your manager so it falls onto two things, the ability to do your job ability to keep a good relationship with people. So that's what I'm looking for.

Shen: Ok that's great, do you think that Nervousness of the employee will affect performance?

View of nervousness in interviews

Zhou: Of course, some activity the very important element when you're doing the interview.   when you do the interview it is important to be confident speech more attractive to and if your nervous  your voice may not be that loud showing the interviewer you are not ready for this job you are not willing to join the company when you're confident it makes you look like you're better than other people so I think you should be more confident when you're doing the interview that's the most important thing for this one should not be so nervous about  interviews. Comment by george kamau: D: Interviews Comment by george kamau: P: Nervousness during the interviews

Shen: OK, what do you think is the most important Factor in deciding where can you hire a person?

Hiring decision factors

Zhou: Ok, so I think why to hire someone to my team look for his past experience that is you of course if he shows he has experience and are you ready for your new job on your future jobs.  of course, your personality am important because it is not an individual job you have work with others So if you want work alone it's not good you need to be good at self-expression how you express something to someone who you don't know is because when you meet someone new they are a stranger to you  so when you try to introduce something to them you must have a good self-expression. So, I'm looking for the ability, experience self-expression that is what I'm looking for when I hire someone. also, I'm looking for the past project that you have done and the programs you wrote before that can show me that you have done something before prove your ability. Comment by george kamau: P: Hire making decision

Shen: Ok sounds good and is part of the step of introduction advantage to everyone?

Zhou: Oh yeah, I mentioned it before is a reflection of someone’s ability of self-expression.  as I mentioned before it is very important how to Express something someone with a complete stranger is very hard I know I have done things like that before,  meeting someone new and introducing yourself they may think that I can work for this person and work for this person because this will give you more positive Energy  do something when you do your self-expression in more positive ways. So, when you do positive self-expression in interviews Fast expression to your interviewer will enable him to decide if he will hire you or not. This expression will enable to determine who you are, how well you can do this job. it is always important to start your self-expression more strongly confidently and it is important because it will include your introduction to the interview.

Shen: Why do you ask about interviewees personal information and project information? Comment by george kamau: D: Describing the information requirements in an interview

Zhou: These things will determine the character of this person. Most people will only focus on the project they wrote before and the problems they wrote before, but I also think another thing to know the personality of this person and find out if he's suitable for the team. So, he has a lot of knowledge a lot of experience shares information improve the team. most important thing is to make connections and relationships with other people and that's how to improve work in the projects. Project information is another side to Determine your ability you cannot have knowledge with bad personalities personality. you have a good personality and but don't know how to do anything either this is not good either. So, you have to know Interviews look at the abilities, personal characters and the ability for project management. So, when You passed the requirement can be determined well good job in some areas and fields so it's important to ask about personal and project information.

Pre-research and insight about company

Shen: So, on just general question how do you know on just a case.

Zhou: So, in interviews, If I was, I carrying out the interviews it is to know more about the company.  The questions they ask is more about the stuff that you did you don't care about your personalities don't care about your life,  I don't care what you're good at, you don't care if you're good it is part and bad at other parts, They mainly focus on the project you’ve done before This helps to focus on one part rather than you  as a whole. so, if I was in the interviews I talk more about my personal life.

Shen: What is your experience on Prototype?

Zhou: if you can ask the next question as I think about this one.

Shen: Okay, sure and would you recommend others for this story because I know you majorly base on math’s case is for the major in computer science what can you advise.

Zhou: Yes  my major is  math’s and computer science  is not my field but I will recommend people study but I also can do interviews for jobs majors are related to each other,  though they may sound different logic study at the beginning is more of the same start develop something and come out with the project the math’s major  you have one point and develop bigger and bigger to solve questions. On computer science when is recommended to know about the coding staff. if you already can create an app that is definitely good and you can develop on that ability. if the math’s major students work in an interview to join computer science companies can also do something like account management or like the number analysis for the company. I also think it will be another advantage to the math major students. They are good and bad ways for people other than the computer science major students to interview.

Shen: In other words, I got your point, whatever your job is everyone has a problem with the interviews because after graduation everyone has to pass through interviews that the major problem, right?

Early preparation to interviews

Zhou: Yes, definitely everyone should start to prepare for the interviews cause after you graduate from the senior year you will go to a lot of companies to do interviews and as we mentioned before you are nervous and will not have much confidence and will not do well on the self-introductions. This will happen after college and it is good to prepare interviews first cause when you are in the room with the managers you are not nervous you will not well even though you are good in your majors you will not get returns. So yes, you should prepare for the interview right now. Comment by george kamau: P: Preparation for interviews at an early stage

Shen: Do you have past experiences related to this?

Zhou: Of course, I used to have many interviews while I was in college, during my freshman year, of course, I would be very nervous my first experience was in a bank to serve people and serve them you have to introduce the product to them, convince them to buy the product, show them the benefits and stuff like that so you to use your self-expression to  attract them. My second interview was in a TV company, for that one you have to learn to write something down how to express things to others there is also the use of self-expression to others. Different jobs will cause you to master different skills Something you are good at and things you are not good at, in my case people were not good at everything. The main focus to work on what you are good at making it more attractive to others. So yes, I have experience in this

Shen: Okay, that's great and how do you think this prototype will help you in your future career.

Benefits of interviews on a career

Zhou: These will help in future career interviews will be of great assistance in the future career, even though we can be rejected by companies’ case of interviews we may be rejected and when we go home, we study on how to improve this part and will help in your future. If you go to a company and they tell you that you are not good at this part you go home and practice on that part. And also, the point is to help you know the point you are not good at and what you are really good at and helps you to become better and better. Doing business also requires self-expression and confidence and have good socialization know how to interact with other people. So, having interviews will definitely aid in your future career. Comment by george kamau: D: Describes the various future career impacts of interviews

Shen: Okay, one more question, in a case you are acting interviewer and now you are interviewed, how do you feel?

Zhou: It is fun to act as an interviewer whenever I become an interviewer. As an interviewee, I was thinking more what questions they will as having a lot on how to do introductions why to become more confident. I will also think of the various question the interviewer will think about when they decide you are good to get the job or not. Now I will have more confidence and be more prepared for future interviews. I will also do a mass analysis for better preparedness for the future. Comment by george kamau: D: Describing felling of upgrading from interviewee to interviewer

Shen: Okay great and the question you missed what is the experience on prototypes, I think this question is similar to other questions so you do not have to answer that because i already have the answer

Zhou: Okay thank you…….

Research Question: Conducting an interview

This interview addresses: the whole concept of interviews. What factors are considered and affect a person’s performance in an interview. The impacts for nervousness, the benefits of confidence. In the interview as Jones put it “personal information and project information” reflect on a person’s character. “It is important to start interviews early in life and they help in a person’s career”.
