HW1DIRECTIONS.docx

Project Part 1

You have 2 weeks to complete this assignment

DIRECTIONS: For this assignment you will conduct a numerical and chart descriptive statistics investigation on the data set associated with this assignment that is posted to Moodle. The dataset is a subset of data collected from the state of Virginia voter turn out data for November 2008 ( https://apps.elections.virginia.gov/SBE_CSV/ELECTIONS/ELECTIONTURNOUT/ ). Additional details regarding the dataset can be found here ( https://www.elections.virginia.gov/resultsreports/)

Your task in this assignment is to summarize the data using 3 communication methods:

1) A written report: the audience for the report are analytics professionals who are expecting a statistics overview of the data. APA formatting is expected

2) A slide presentation: the audience are executive decision makers, with little statistics background, who are interested in being bought up to date regarding Alexandria election results. Bulleting, charts, and tables are expected

3) An infographic: it is to serve as a quick 1 page reference for individuals wanting to review interesting highlights regarding the election results. Colorful visuals and optimal use and placement of short text statements are expected

You are encouraged to interact with fellow students; however your submission should be a reflection of our own individual understanding. That is, this is NOT a group assignment. Each student is to submit their own set of documents.

DO NOT submit Excel datasets to Moodle with your assignment. Copy and paste all charts, tables, and graphs from Excel into your submission document. Tables, charts, and graphs are to be formatted to expectations for the class (see Week 1 materials). Points are deducted for formatting and illegibility. Please use complete sentences when providing discussions or reporting interpretations for results (see week 1 materials). Report calculations when requested.

Deliverables: You are to post 3 separate submissions for this assignment. EVERY submission is to be in PDF format only.

1) Submit a written report . There should be 4 subheadings in your report (Introduction, Numerical Summary Analysis, Chart Analysis, Z-scores) . The introduction section should provide a brief overview of the dataset purpose and where (or whom) it was obtained. The Numerical Summary section should include ALL descriptive statistic numerical tables for every interval or ratio level variable in the dataset. Use the Descriptive Statistic Tool, in the Data Analysis Tool Pak, in Excel to generate the numerical tables. Provide interpretations for the measure of center, kurtosis, and skewness.

Also indicate the appropriate measure of variability to use (standard deviation or IQR) based on the appropriate measure of center. Provide a justification for our choice. If necessary, calculate the IQR and show your calculations.

The Chart Analysis Section should include a histogram and box plot for every interval or ratio level variable in the dataset. An interpretation of the shape of the distribution (based on the histogram and box plot) should be included.

For the Z-score section: To gather the information needed in your Z-score section, generate a column in the dataset that calculates the z-scores for all values of interval or ratio level variables. Report the formulas (include any constants used in the formula) used to calculate the z scores. ONLY Report the highest and lowest z-score and the associated with each variable. DO NOT report all z-scores in your writeup.

2) Submit a slide presentation. Your slide presentation should contain all variable tables and charts generated in your written report. It should also include 2 charts (your choice) that provide insightful information regarding voter turn out in one of the precinct categories (100s, 200s, or the 300s) (your choice) that was not reported on in your written report. Charts and tables should be placed on their own slide and a brief interpretive talking point (use bulleting) should be included on each slide. Number all tables and charts and format to class expectations. Please be sure that your presentation has a decorative attractive theme throughout and includes a title slide and a slide that lists all variables in the dataset, a brief description of each variable, and its level of measurement

3) Submit an infographic. This should be a 1 page infographic which shares some insightful results from the descriptive statistics investigation completed in #1 and #2 above. The page should communicate the information visually, succinctly, and use text and numerical summaries in a supportive manner. The infographic should be colorful, well laid out, and visually appealing. DO NOT VOER POPULATE THE PAGE WITH IRRELEVANT GRAPHICS that do not communicate any information about the dataset. You may include a few decorative graphics; however, they should not take up more than 1/6 of the page space.

Please see the resources listed in Moodle for examples and for free online resources that can be used to assist in the creation of an infographic. However, also please feel free to use any desktop publishing tool (Office products etc …), that you are comfortable with using, to design your infographic. Your submission to Moodle should be in PDF format only. There are free online Infographic tool (might require you to subscribe).
