answer the three essay questions
Your essay should demonstrate that you understand the relevant concepts as covered in lecture and in the readings.
Integrate specific names, terms, and examples to enrich your essay.
Question 1
“In theory, Republicans on Capitol Hill, sensing a weakened president, could cut deals with the Democrats as both parties look ahead to the midterm elections in 2018. But so long as Trump remains popular with the GOP’s base, Republicans’ appetite for joining Democrats at the bargaining table will be limited.” Sarah Binder, Foreign Affairs (January 2018)
Identify and explain the stages of the “policy process”.
Consider the Binder article and other readings and the lectures. At which stage of the policy process has President Trump been most successful? Where has he had the most problems? How does the “sorting” of our political system affect the president’s success?
Do you think the Trump administration will have much greater legislative success in the next two years? Why, or why not?
Question 2
List and describe the various categories of “conservatives” and “liberals” discussed in class.
Provide an example of a policy that would appeal to each category of conservative and liberal.
Identify the two categories that you think will motivate the most voters in the November 2018 election. Explain your choices.
Question 3
Address one of these two scenarios:
1) You are an advisor to newly elected President Donald Trump. He wants to know what “policy tools” are, and how each generic tool could be used to promote either economic growth or the restriction of immigration.
