The Symbols of “Hut on the Mountain” Told Through Origami

Powerpoint and origami by: Sarah Delaney

The Mountain

The mountain symbolizes the center of the world, mental rising, and overcoming obstacles.

“One day, I decided to go up on the mountain to find out what on earth was the trouble.”

The Hut

The hut represents true feelings not attended to, feelings from the past, and feelings of entrapment.

“In the little hut on the mountain, someone is groaning, too”

The Tidying of the Desk

This symbolizes the compartments of the mind, the narrator’s introspection, and insight of day to day life.

The Well

The well represents disarray, the unification of experiences, community, the thirst for meaning, motivation, and answers to unanswered questions.

The Window Screens

This represents revealing the truth, and violation of security.

The Howling of the Wolves

This symbolizes a threat, fear of the unknown, and the need for protection.

The White Flame

The white flame symbolizes censorship, the feeling of being watched, cameras logging ones every move, and blocking out the truth.

The Hidden Bug

The hidden bug represents hidden cameras/people and the punishment of the disobedient or non-conforming.

Closing Note

I chose to use origami to explain the prominent symbols in “The Hut on the Mountain” because origami actually originated in medieval China, and this story comes from the Chinese fiction writer, Can Xue. I thought it would be an interesting incorporation of Chinese culture to represent the author’s story through origami or “Chinese paper folding” :)
