Abstract
An abstract is a brief summary of your essay, thesis, or dissertation. It should be approximately
100-150 words long (unless otherwise indicated by your instructor) and is located on page 2 of
your paper. See that all lines are flush against the left margin, including the very first line of this
abstract. (Don’t indent the first line like you normally would for the first line of each paragraph
of your essay.) The abstract should be concise – you’re attempting to pack in a lot of
information into just a few words. This abstract happens to be 118 words long (not including the
keywords). Remember to include some keywords that your reader should be familiar with
before reading your paper.
Keywords: APA style, citation, formatting

Essay text goes here. Make sure you remember that the first line of each paragraph
should be indented by half an inch. This is easily accomplished by using the Tab key on the
keyboard. A tip: Make sure that your line spacing is set to double spaced (2.0). Also check the
spacing before and after each paragraph. In the Paragraph settings button, Spacing Before and
After should each be set to 0 pt.
If you have any questions about formatting your APA paper or citations, you can contact
the library at (717) 901-5188 or [email protected]. You can also check out our APA
guide located at http://library.harrisburgu.edu/apa. Also, feel free to visit the Purdue Online
Writing Lab (OWL). This site is accessed at

Remember, your references list will begin on a new page, not at the bottom of the last
page of your essay. See the next page to view example citations. Also see Appendix A and
Appendix B for more information about formatting appendices.

Appendix A
Appendix information goes here. It could be text, charts, graphs, survey questions, etc. The main
thing to remember when deciding if you should include information in the body of your essay or
as an appendix is that generally, you want to make information an appendix if it’s large and/or
complicated. APA style values conciseness – so if information is going to make the body of
your essay no longer be concise, then include the information as an appendix. This allows the
reader to make the decision to view the appendix if (s)he is interested in seeing the details.

Appendix B
If you are writing text as your appendix, notice that the first line should be flush against the left
margin, not indented half an inch as you would for paragraphs in your essay.
