All students from varying SES backgrounds, including gifted, at-risk, special education, & multilingual students

Program Participant Incentive
Students earn small rewards, such as theme folders, pencils, and gold medals if student read specified amount of books
Program Time Length
6 to 8 Months
Important Program Details
K-3RD Grade: Goal of 120 books to read to receive reward
4-8th Grade: Goal of to read 2,400 pages to receive reward
Program currently exists in over 5,000 schools in 45 states & utilized in many extended school day programs
Includes parental engagement component

Junior Great Books Curriculum of Interpretive Reading, Writing, & Discussion (JGBC)
Program Purpose: Is a junior version of the Great Books Foundation program. It strives to promote cognitive processing in reading comprehension and literacy in children by emphasizing three kinds of thinking: factual, interpretive, and evaluative.
Target Population: Grades 2nd-12th
Important Program Details
JGBC is NOT stand alone program
Program is a partial replacement or supplement to a regular reading program during a school day
Program Activities include: text-opener, reading the story twice, sharing questions, directed notes, interpreting words, shared inquiry discussion, & writing after the discussion

Murfreesboro Extended School Program (ESP)
Program Purpose: provide a safe, educationally enriching, fun and rewarding experience for all students of Murfreesboro City Schools
Target Population: Grades K-12th
Activities: sports, music, arts and crafts, woodworking, ballet, hip hop dance, cheerleading, cooking, journalism, science, technology, foreign languages, robotics, homework assistance

Murfreesboro Extended School Program (ESP)
Program Time Length
Morning Hours of Operation: 6am until 7:45am
Afternoon Hours of Operation: 2:25pm until 6pm
Important Program Details
One of the most widely known, community-based, extended day school programs
Clear academic focus but also includes cultural & recreational elements
Students are tutored daily for 30 minutes by Middle Tenessee State University students, volunteer parents & staff members with homework
After the conclusion of homework assistance, students are able to choose additional academic skills classes in which they learn basic reading and mathematic skills, geography, science, cultural activites, study skills, and other critical thinking techniques
ESP is now instrumented in all MSD Schools

Coca-Cola Valued Youth Program
Program Overview: is a cross-age tutoring program designed to increase the self-esteem and school success of at-risk middle & high school students by placing them in postitions of responsibility as tutors of younger, elementary students
Program Goal: (1) is to reduce the dropout rate of at-risk students by improving their self-concepts and academic skills
(2) emphasizes the elimination of non-academic and disciplinary factors that contribute to students dropping out

Tutors are required to enroll in a special tutoring class, that allows students to improve their own academic basic skills and increase tutoring capability

Intercultural Development Research Association in San Antonio, Texas created VYP
Program has been implemented in throughout the Southwest and elsewhere
Program is also used in afterschool programs
Tutors work with 3 elementary students at at time for a total of about 4 hours a week

Project Success Enrichment (PSE)
Program Overview: designed to enrich students’ language arts and visual arts literacy as well as their creative, critical, social, and self-management skills. The interdisciplinary program focuses on a process approach to writing to integrate literature, higher-order thinking skills, the multiple intelligences, and other disciplines.
Target Population: All students including regular education, Title I, at-risk, special needs, Limited English Proficient.
Important Program Details
Orignially developed to enrich the language arts of gifted and talented students
Project Success Enrichment is currently implemented in 2,500 schools in 40 states.

Exemplary Center for Reading Instruction (ECRI)
Program Overview: is a program designed as a practical guide to teach reading and other language arts skills to students
Program Goal: to improve students’ reading ability
Target Population: K-12th Grade ( primarily up to 6th grade)
Program Activities: Reading-related skills (i.e. word recognition, spelling, & student skills)
Important Program Details
ECRI implemented as regular & afterschool program
ECRI can also be used as a program to strengthen regular classroom instruction or as a remedial intervention
