Guidelines for HUMN 1201 Presentations and Handouts

Make a PowerPoint or a Prezi with handout. Talk at least 10 minutes, but no more than 15.

Parameters

· Find your date and topic on the syllabus (Day 1 of class. Ask if unsure of topic/date.)

· Learn all about this topic by doing research online and in the library.

· Make a Works Cited list of all print and visual sources used.

· Prepare a talk that informs and interests your classmates.

Form and Content

· You may use the PowerPoint slide program as your handout. Or, you may design your own handout. Put all the images, written material, works cited, and your name on slides and sheet.

· Use black and white for the handout, but use color on the screen.

· Use three (3) or more credible sources and list them in your MLA style Works Cited page on the handout and on the presentation. All sources must be available through the DSC library.

· Use sources written by experts. You may use the Encyclopedia Britannica or Encyclopedia Americana, but not Wikipedia. You may also use museum or university sites. Please use and bring at least one physical book. You may include a video, but talk for ten minutes first.

· Include some visual material: diagrams, photos, or drawings.

· Make at least ten (10) slides and use at least five (5) images.

· Pick material and images that do not already appear in the textbook.

· You may have seven words per line, seven lines per slide, maximum, 7 x 7.

· Proofread. Also, ask about pronunciation beforehand.

Evaluation: I want--

· Clarity and correctness.

· Strong sources

· Good delivery

Hints

· Look at your audience. Speak to them instead of reading.

· Help classmates understand the topic. Make it interesting!

· Use humor if you wish, but please don’t be sarcastic.

· Nervous? Plan and prepare. Practice with a friend, teddy bear, mirror, or your phone.

· Respond well to unplanned events: technical problems, latecomers. I will expect your talk to go on as scheduled, even if problems arise. If you have an emergency on your presentation day, call or email me right away. I will try to re-schedule you.
