Discussion 1 (Marlissa)

My name is Marlissa. I currently reside in Phoenix, Arizona. I have two nephews who are ages ten and eight. I strive to be the best auntie and enjoy spending weekends attending their sporting events. I have one dog named Rylee, a fourteen-year-old lab-pit mix. I earned my bachelor's degree in criminal justice from the University of Arizona. I continue to be a huge Arizona Wildcats fan. I enjoy watching professional sports, particularly basketball, soccer, and football. I like to stay active by jogging and hiking in my free time.

I started my professional career working as a case manager for the Arizona Department of Child Safety. I have worked for various other social services agencies over the years. I moved to Atlanta, Georgia, in 2007 and spent two years there working as a Parole Officer. I returned to Phoenix and began employment with the County. I held two different positions within the County during my 8-year stay. Both positions involved working within the juvenile court on delinquency and dependency cases. I now work as Grant Coordinator for the State.

My new path of grant management has sparked my interest in learning more about human services. Continuing my education will help me gain knowledge to progress upward professionally. This degree particularly interested me because of the focus on grant writing, budget management, ethical standards, and leading people. From this course, I hope to gain further knowledge of the history of the human services field and how it continues to evolve. I also want to learn about fields within human services that I have not worked in that may provide future partnering opportunities to enhance my personal and professional life.

Discussion 2 (Linda)

Hello everyone! My name is Linda I am 22 years old. Originally, I am from a small town in Northwestern Illinois, Stockton. Above is a picture of me and my husband, Tyler. We have been married for a little over two years but have been together for six. He is

currently in the Navy. We are stationed in Yokosuka, Japan. Soon, we will be moving to Hawaii for the decommissioning of his ship. Also, we are expecting in July; we are having a boy! I am very fortunate to have met the love of my life at a young age and can travel the world with him and our future baby! I recently graduated from Columbia College of Missouri with my Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services. This was also an online program.

Currently, I am unemployed, but occasionally babysit on base. I really enjoy working with children. In the future, I would love to work with underprivileged children; I want to advocate for those that do not have the ability to advocate for themselves. In my free time, I enjoy reading, online shopping, Face-timing family back home, and watching murder shows.

When it comes to work experience, I have always worked in a field that involves dealing with the public. I love social interaction and helping others. There are many different careers in the human service field, because it is such a broad field. Some examples of careers include case management, counselors, and family advocates. The information that I will obtain from this class will be the foundation of my career. I am hoping to learn more about how to communicate with others that are diversely different from me. I am looking forward to the many great discussions that we will have throughout this course. Even though this class is online, I am looking forward to virtually meeting you all!
