CASE STUDIES

Mags Company Limited is a manufacturing company that produces aluminium pots. For ten consecutive years the company has been successful. However, in its eleventh year of operations, the HR manager resigned as well as the general manager. Within a year of the resignation of both managers, the company’s profits started to plummet, and working conditions began to deteriorate. There were numerous accidents in the plant. Several new workers did not get training based on safety operations even though the plant manager requested for them to be trained. The plant manager tried to push safety first, a previous OHS policy which was implemented by the previous HR and general manager, but the employees continued to do as they please; smoking in unmarked non-smoking areas, working without the few safety gears with which they were provided among other serious safety infractions. Machines in the entire organization were been serviced infrequently and some even started malfunctioning. Administrative staff had to work with their office windows open because the air conditioning units did not work as a result, they were plagued by noise and dust coming from a section of the building that was being renovated. Also, a section of the administrative building had mold and the air quality was poor.
With the mounting health and safety issues at Mags Company Ltd, many employees were missing work due to work related illnesses and the health and safety conscious employees were disgruntled and threatened industrial action. They blamed management for not addressing the OHS issues.
