Human development

Human development has changed every generation through history. For example, I have never used a phone until I was 14 years old, but my brother who is 7 years younger than me had a phone when he was 8 years old. My brother would always tell me that your time is deferent from my time. In an article “Gen Y’s ego trip takes a bad turn,” by Larry Gordon and Louis Sahagun in Los Angeles Times published on February 27, 2007, discussing a study by Jean Twenge, SDSU associate professor, about GenY’s personal and social problems caused by high self-esteem. Twenge believes that Gen Y’s has a high self-esteem where people would have some difficulties understanding each other. According to the article, “People with an inflated sense of self tend to have less interest in emotionally intimate bonds and can lash out when rejected, or insulted,” which shows that high self esteem causes insecurity. People would tend to not have many friends because they do not want to get disrespected, or look stupid around people. There are two main factors that make GenY’s have high esteem which are social media and surrounding community.

Through social media, many people are sharing their funny moments and their ability to succeed. Social media has a huge impact on people’s confident because they are acting instead of being themselves. Also, Social media led people to be more unrealistic to themselves and their followers. For instance, celebrities usually share their best version of their happy life, instead of their real life. Celebrities life in social media are mostly surrounded with lovely people and their luxuries, which make their fans want to be like them. However, these social media attitude makes people to be more materialistic and unrealistic. Many people buy unnecessary things to represent themselves better around their friends, even if they barely can afford it. Many people when they start recoding for social media, they act as they are having a lot of fun just to show people that they are amazing. This habit increases their confident temporary among their thmeselves. Moreover, it helps them think that they can get what they want as everyone else regarding of their financial status. However, it is a temporary feeling then they would want to get something else, or act something out to keep their friends interested in them. These people live miserably because they are not improving financially, and they cannot be satisfied with what they have already. “Generation Me: Why today’s young Americans are more confident, assertive, entitled — and more miserable than ever before,”(Twenge, paragraph 8), which demonstrate that narcissistic personality would make people miserable because they cannot be honest to themselves. In addition, they are having a separation among themselves because they are stuck in the media world trying to be like someone else, or better which cause depression. It also cause social problems because they are trying to impress their friends in social media, and giving less attention to their surrounding people. Therefore, high self esteem helps people to look better and professional, but it can decrease happiness, since they cannot act normal in social media, or real life.

Every society has there own values and believes that shape people’s personality and their behavior. However, since we started to use the internet, societies have been influenced by ideas of other societies. The internet shape the way many students think on education and life success. In the article states“ But survey also showed that current freshmen are such more interested in finical success and less in “ a meaningful philosophy of life” than students were in the 1970s,” which shows that some students are not in school to enjoy learning subjects that would not help them financially, but they only care about majors that would help them in real world. One of the reason is that rich people are the one who can influence the world. It is clear to everyone that money can bring anything we desire which increase their confidence. Students feels that it is crucial to have money to be successful among your society. This believe made many students insecure about their life. People started to link money with success which cause them to think that more money makes them more confident. Therefore, people who are struggling financially feels insecure and unsatisfied in their life. It decreases our social interaction because of their self esteem. Many people act very confidence to hide their insecurity because it makes them feels stronger and better. All in all, since the internet excited, GenY’ has new definition of life success which makes their behavior deferent from other generations.

In addition, many societies have changed the way they think about fashion. Fashion used to show a person’s financial status easily. However, I think that people who are struggling financially are more likely to wear expensive brands than others. Some people would get fake products to impress their friends. These people are having insecurity problem where they show their confidence by wearing expensive brands. For example, many celebrities are raised in poor community. When they get rich, they spend their money recklessly to show their personal status and success. On the other hand, children who are raised in a rich society are more likely to be humble and spend their money wisely. It shows that even celebrities have a problem with insecurity. Therefore, many people hide their insecurity by having a high self esteem which creates social problems in the society.
