The Importance of Understanding Current Issues in Human Resources of a Sports Organization

Sports organizations are distinct from other organizations; they deal with sports only and must be able to manage the irrational passions and emotional attachment of the people involved to sports. In sports organizations, it is impossible to separate the sport itself and the people who play it. Production and consumption of products from sports organizations occur concurrently although they are intangible. This features make sports organizations quite unique when compared with other business organizations. Human resource management in sports organizations requires that the manager brings out the bets in players, coaches and other sports officials. This in turn translates to customer satisfaction and accomplishment of demands (fans, shareholders, volunteers).

Sports organizations can be classified into public, voluntary, not-for-profit organizations, commercial and professional organizations. Depending on the nature of an organizations, there are paid staff, board of directors, coaches, medical staff, volunteers, and stadium staff among other people who are managed by the human resource manager. Presently, the sports organizations are faced with contemporary issues resulting from globalization, commercialization and increased accountability (Managing people in sport organisations: A strategic human resource perspective, n.d). This causes sports organizations to have managers who are up to date with current issues so as to effectively address the issues arising today. For instance, sports organizations are experiencing an increase in the number of paid staff who are assigned roles that were previously volunteered for. Also, experts in various fields such as financial administration are increasingly being hired by sports organizations regardless of their interest or knowledge of sports. Similarly, board of directors are selected on basis of their business intelligence and not on the basis of their sports prowess (Managing people in sport organisations: A strategic human resource perspective, n.d). In other words, human resource managers must be as effective as possible to understand current trends in sports organizations and use their expertise to bring out the best in all the people involved in the sport organization.

Managing people in sports organizations is not easy. Human resource managers must make sure that they organization attracts, develops and retains talent. This they achieve by working with the management to ensure that resources needed are provided for people to grow, prosper and become highly competitive. It is the role of a human resource manager to identify and recruit the right coach, departmental managers and even players. Effective identification and recruitment of important people within the organization propels the organizations from a small organization to a recognizable league or world champion.

In conclusion, there have been many changes in human resource in sports organizations. Today, sports organizations are more concerned with effectiveness, the organizations must comply with employment laws, and the sports organizations must allocate resources to meet needs. Sustainability of sports organization is determined by how well the human resource management evolves with the emerging needs, legal issues and technology adoption. Understanding current issues in human resource will help the organization plan and implement policies, programs and practices that will result in competitive advantage for the organization (Weerakoon, 2016). Understanding current issues will facilitate value creation as well as effective planning, recruitment, selection, retention, replacement, orientation, training, development and appraisal and reward of the human resource within the sports organization.
