Describe the emergence of the Greeks’ family of deities and be able to list some of these gods and their functions in Greek life. E. Be able to describe red-figure and black-figure vase painting. F. Identify the characteristics of Archaic sculpture. G. Identify the characteristics of Doric order of architecture. H. Know examples of Greek poetry, literature, music and dance. I. Become familiar with the chronological flow of the history of Ancient Greece.
Ancient Greece is a misnomer because it never existed. There was no unified thing as Greece. There were many small city-like groupings of people each different from the other and each having a great deal of distrust for the other. There were no roads and getting from one place to the other was, in the beginning, virtually impossible. That is why each one of these groups of people living independent of each other developed very different styles of living. Each was its own city-state with its individual kings and queens. We will get to that soon enough but first let’s dig back even before mainland "Greece" was developed.
After you have completed this chapter, go on to chapter 3. It has more information about Greece. With that unit, you will find out more information about architecture.
Make sure you look under "Assignment" for the exercise related to this unit. Also, be certain to study over the Outline, View, and Key Terms at the beginning of the chapter. The test will cover Chapters 1-4, but here are some items to study in Chapter 2:
