Good post, I agree. It is important to understand that not all failures have to end in failure. Most always it is an opportunity to learn. Like Edison said, "I have not failed, I have just found out 10,000 ways it will not work." I feel that too many times people get disheartened and give up on their dreams or aspirations due to slight failures. The only mortal failure is if you quit trying.

I have had many successful failures in my life. To me a successful failure means that I have learned from my failure. In the fire department I would kinda say sometimes we embrace a successful failure. What I mean by this is sometimes we lose our battle but if we all come home safe then it's a good thing. But a successful failure is a good opportunity to learn and make changes. I the fire service you have to make decisions at the speed of light. So we take our decisions very seriously and mostly try to write procedures to make the same decisions all the time. These procedure have been developed by some successful failures. An example of a successful failure that happened recently was an apparatus fender bender. It was a failure in the aspect of a piece of equipment has a dent. The successful side of this is that we developed a better apparatus backing policy with the input of the crews involved in the incident. The collaboration between firefighters, officers, and chief officers made great improvements to our policy. This was accomplished by the identity of the issues when backing up, evaluation of the needs to fix the issues, and the addition of backup cameras on the older apparatus. What aspect of problem solving do you find to be the hardest for you?
