Complete this worksheet by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. In the first table of the worksheet, complete the following:

1. For each era, identify an artifact that depicts one of the characteristics provided.

2. Explain which characteristic you think it represents, and why.

In the second table, address the following:

1. In the first column, identify creators from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries who you think made important contributions to art and culture in the form of humanities artifacts that impacted society.

2. Identify one of the artifacts they created (in the second column) and the medium of the artifact (in the third column). Recall from Fundamentals of Human Culture that mediums can include dance, literature, sculpture, visual arts, architecture, music, performance, and so forth.

3. Explain why you believe the creator felt the need to express their ideas (in the fourth column). For example, if one of the people you chose was John Lennon, you could identify one of his songs and discuss how the song relates to examples of his social activism.

A Burial at Ornans 1849-50 by Gustave Courbet	Courbet believed an artist should paint pictures of the culture and time they lived which made it historical. A Burial at Ornans painting is his way of depicting his cultures and his everyday life. This painting is view of his uncle’s funeral.	Degas, The Bellelli Family by Edgar Degas	Degas is depicting his family; it is well painted with the clear line and color distinction. His background and knowledge of ships started while growing up as the son of yachtsman. He developed his skills of drawing while attending a commercial art studio and went on to join the Royal Navy. His life like and technical accuracy paintings of ships out to sea earned him place as one of the most popular seascape artists.
Twenty-first Century: Richard Serra	‘Sequence’	Steele	Serra is known for his want and ability to alter how an ordinary space is perceived. With the use of steel, he did this. These sculptures of spheres that tower in height and with the use of simple lines. It has been said people get disoriented as if when walking through them they are walking through a maze.

In one to two paragraphs, answer the following questions:

· What differences do you notice between the artifacts from each era?

· In the context of what you have learned in this theme, where do you think those differences stemmed from?

The difference in Pieces of Eight by Montague Dawson and ‘Sequence’ by Richard Serra is how people feel when viewing these artifacts. When viewing Pieces of Eight one will admire the realistic beauty and accuracy of ships out to sea painting by Dawson. However, beauty is not a feeling you get when you see the huge spheres of steel called ‘Sequence’.

I think simply put the differences stem from what each era perceived as art. Dawson conveyed his art through highly accurate depiction of the familiar. Serra conveyed his belief that art doesn’t have to be about the beauty and his desire to see beyond the familiar.
