Now that the exploration document is behind you, it’s time to turn your attention to part two of the project: the presentation. You’ve already chosen your two artifacts and compared how they express a common theme. The presentation will help you boil your thinking down to a clear, compelling argument to benefit a specific audience.

Just as you did for the exploration document, take some time to think critically about the nature of this assignment. Doing so will enable you to approach the task with greater efficiency, clarity, and confidence.

Goals

What’s the purpose of this assignment? The text below, on part two of the project, is copied from the HUM-200: Final Project Prompt document in Brightspace.

In part two, students will develop a presentation for the audience they identified in part one. In their presentation, students will discuss the impact of their cultural artifacts, theme, and thesis statement on both individuals and society, supporting their claims with evidence. Students will also explain how the study of the humanities has impacted them both personally and professionally.

Format

Knowing the format enables you to start imagining what you’ll be making and to think about how you get from here to an A.

Your presentation should have approximately 5–7 slides and use PowerPoint, Google Slides, Prezi, or a comparable presentation tool. You won’t actually present to an audience, but you will use the “speaker notes” section to show your instructor what you would say if you were to actually give the presentation.

Structure

With this new assignment comes a new set of critical elements. Just as before, the webtext will help guide you through each step, but this time much more quickly and with a lot less hand-holding. You’ll need to do more of the work and do it faster. But your work on the exploration document should give you much of what you need.

Your exploration document should provide most of what you need to complete your presentation. However, the presentation does include several unique elements that will require you to write some new material—keeping the needs of your selected audience in mind—and then find or create suitable visuals for your slides.

Your presentation should answer the following prompt:

Based on your exploration document, create a presentation that explains how the humanities have impacted you both personally and professionally and discusses the impact of your theme on your audience.

Be sure to address the following critical elements:

1. Provide a brief overview of your artifacts, theme, and thesis statement. How are they situated within the domain of the humanities?

2. Explain how the theme (as it is expressed in the cultural artifacts) and thesis statement impact the audience. In other words, how is the theme relevant to members of the audience? Why should the audience care about your thesis statement? Support your response with specific examples from your exploration document.

3. Describe the evidence from both subjective and objective cultural analyses to support your conclusions about the impact of the theme and cultural artifacts on you personally and on your audience. Support your response with specific examples from your exploration document.

4. Explain why the theme and cultural artifacts are important to you personally. Why did you select these artifacts to study? Why did you select your theme, especially if there are other themes that could apply?

5. Explain how studying the humanities can give you both a personal and professional advantage. What is the benefit of studying the humanities?

6. Explain why the humanities are important to society. What do the humanities tell us about our own culture and experiences? How do the humanities impact us? Support your response with specific examples from your exploration document and your own personal and professional experiences.

7. Communicate your message in a way that is tailored to your specific audience. For instance, you could consider your vocabulary, your audience’s potential current humanities knowledge (or lack thereof), and what is particularly important to the audience.
