Rubric Review the Rubric 4 Module Four: Examining the Humanities, continued / Page 4.1.1 Review the Rubric On this page: 0 of 6 attempted (0%) | 0 of 5 correct (0%) Objective: Understand how your project will be graded by reviewing the rubric for the assignment.
Academic writing is something of an art, which means that evaluating that writing requires a lot of careful consideration by a reader. In a course like this one, there are many sections (each with many students), so many different people will be grading assignments. How can a school communicate standards for student work clearly and help instructors be consistent in how they apply those standards?
The answer, for many courses and schools, is a rubric. A rubric typically lists each of the critical elements of the assignment and, for each element, describes a few different standards of performance.
For example, your exploration document will include a section in which you describe the cultural artifacts you have chosen. This element is worth 8 of the 100 points possible for this assignment.
The rubric for this assignment asks your instructor to give your description one of four ratings:
Not Evident: If your work “does not describe selected cultural artifacts” in the paper, you’ll get 0 of the 8 points. Needs Improvement: If your work “describes selected cultural artifacts, but with gaps in detail or clarity,” you’ll get 55% of the 8 points, which is 4.4 points. Proficient: If your work effectively “describes selected cultural artifacts” you’ll get 85% (6.8 points). Exemplary: If your work “meets ‘Proficient’ criteria and description is exceptionally clear and contextualized,” you’ll earn 100%—all 8 points.
The detailed standard provided for each of these four categories helps ensure consistent grading from one day to another and from one instructor to the next.
What follows is the complete rubric for your exploration document and a few questions about it. You don’t need to read the entire rubric word for word, but let the questions
below guide your review of it. Knowing how you’ll be graded makes earning a good grade a lot easier!
