Format

Basic Rules for Paper Format are provided by APA. Check out this guide for margins, spacing, font, paragraph set-up and more.

Student paper title page includes page number, author, university affiliation, course name and #, instructor name, and due date. No running head.

Headings help readers understand the organization of a paper. APA has 5 levels of headings with specific formatting instructions.

Font: The same font should be used throughout paper. APA recommends the following because they are legible, widely available, and accessible: 12-point Times New Roman, 11-point Georgia, 11-point Calibri, 11- point Arial, or 10-point Lucida Sans Unicode.

Tables and Figures format instructions are provided by APA to insure they are accessible, clear, and consistent.

Punctuation: 1 space after end punctuation.

Spelling: The Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary is the preferred spelling reference. Also APA Style provides preferred spellings for common technology terms.

Grammar: Attention is given to bias-free language, accessibility, and grammar guidelines – such as first- person pronouns, active and passive voice, and singular “they”.

In-Text Citations

Basic Principles for In-Text Citations In-text citations generally follow the author-date format. For direct quotations, additional location information is included. See Citing Specific Parts of a Source.

Citing specific parts of a source such as page number, chapter, table, paragraph, or slide are included. This is especially applicable for direct quotations.

Multiple Authors in the in-text citations. Include author name(s) for one or two authors. For three or more, include the first plus “et al.” in every in-text citation.

Personal communications such as emails, texts, chats, personal interviews, and more are cited in-text but not on the References list if they are not retrievable.

Basic Principles of Reference List Entries The 7th edition includes many more examples for different types of resources. The section on whether to include Database Information in References is included.

Reference entries for articles or books retrieved from databases should include the DOI. If there is no DOI, then the entry should end the same as it would for a print publication. No database name or URL is included in citation. Exceptions: Proprietary and Limited Circulation materials have different rules. For Herzing this would apply for resources like Cochrane and dissertations from ProQuest.

Reference entries for books do include the publisher but do not include place of publication.

Specific examples are provided for materials from LMS and intranets. For more information, see the Herzing Library document “Citing Materials from HU Courses.”

Reference entries from social media sources are provided and the formats are revised and expanded. New guidance is given for webpages. The words “Retrieved from” are no longer included as a general rule.

Audiovisual resource examples for YouTube, Ted Talks, films, artworks, and more are provided.

Multiple Authors: Rules for citing multiple authors in-text and in reference list have changed. For example, in the reference list include up to 20 authors.

DOIs and URLs are used in some citations. Expanded explanation is included in the 7th edition.
