What is Health Informatics?

There are actually many definitions and perspectives, as this is an evolving science.

“the field of information science concerned with management of healthcare data and information through the application of computers and other technologies.”

“it is more about applying information in the healthcare field than it is about technology”

“application of computers, communications and information technology and systems to all fields of medicine – medical care, medical education and medical research”

Health Informatics is that unique and strategic crossroad where health sciences meet information and computer sciences; where “high tech meets human health”.

Barriers to HIT Adoption

Digital Healthcare

Simply stated, healthcare is going digital and creating many opportunities. Yes, formerly on paper, health records are increasingly online. Yet, health informatics is so much more than just record keeping. It is about connecting healthcare, from first responders on the scene, to clinics, hospitals, home care, public health and more. Informatics is about helping both practitioners on the front lines of care as well as administrators to make the best decisions.

In summary, there is both an art and a science to the flow if information in ways that both improve human health and make healthcare more cost effective.
