Paper Topic Assignment

Substance Abuse

Substance abuse is the excessive use of drugs in a way r that damages the user and those around them. It is a

serious health issue that may impact one's physical, emotional, and social well-being. The most often misused

substance is alcohol, followed by cocaine, marijuana, and opioids. Adult alcohol addiction in the USA is a serious

issue. Over 14 million individuals in the USA are thought to misuse alcohol in some way. Individuals, families, and

communities are all directly impacted by the effects of alcohol misuse on their health and wellness. Alcohol abuse

is associated with many physical, mental, and social problems (Alozai & Sharma, 2022). It increases the risk of

numerous health problems, including liver cirrhosis, certain cancers, stroke, hypertension, depression, and

dementia. It also increases the risk of accidents, violence, and suicide. Excessive drinking can also lead to financial

and legal problems, social isolation, and strained relationships with family and friends.

Regular drinking of more than the maximum average of two servings for men and one for women is the

main risk factor for alcohol addiction. Other risk factors comprise having easy access to alcohol, having poor self-

esteem, being depressed or having other mental health problems, and a family history of AUD. Alcohol misuse

may also affect the economy. Alcohol misuse costs the US economy $249 billion annually; this covers medical

expenses, missed productivity, and expenses resulting from crime and auto accidents (Alozai & Sharma, 2022).

Employment of various measures can decrease adult alcohol abuse in the USA. These include raising alcohol taxes

and pricing, enacting measures to limit access to alcohol, and controlling the promotion and marketing of alcoholic

drinks. Furthermore, it's critical to support and make therapy for those with alcohol use problems accessible.

Understanding why patients with substance use

disorders leave the hospital against medical

advice: A qualitative study. Substance Abuse,

Simon et al.

(2019) examine why

clients with substance use

disorders are released

from the medical facility

against medical advice.

The authors found four

main reasons why patients

leave the hospital early

through semi-structured

interviews with 15

respondents: untreated

drug desire and

withdrawal, unmanaged

chronic and acute pain,

discrimination and stigma

by hospital staff, and

facility constraints. The

study's findings show that

Given that Simon et

al. (2019) emphasizes

explaining why Substance

abuse patients are

abandoning the hospital

against medical advice, this

study is highly relevant to

drug addiction and alcohol

abuse. The results offer

insightful information into

the causes of AMA

discharges for Substance

abuse patients and indicate

the need for enhanced

inpatient drug rehabilitation,

particularly for controlling

co-occurring pain and

withdrawal and addressing

the stigma associated with

4

discharges are linked to

higher mortality and re-

admission rates,

underscoring the

importance of inpatient

drug rehabilitation and

changing people's

perspectives about

Substance abuse. The fact

that the authors did a

qualitative study and used

maximum variation

sampling to assure

diversity across gender,

ethnicity, age, and type of

drug use disorder gives

credibility to this study.

The authors analyzed the

transcripts using two

coders, giving them a

trustworthy source of

information

addiction among healthcare

providers.

This article

investigates the effects of

the minimum unit price

for alcohol on homeless

people. The study

employed a qualitative

technique to conduct a

semi-structured interview

with 41 stakeholders to

learn more about their

perspectives on

implementing MUP and

its effects on this

demographic. The

findings imply that

implementing MUP had

little effect on homeless

people and their access to

assistance. The authors

conclude that MUP is

likely to assist this

population on a

population level with

This study provides

valuable insights into the

potential impact of alcohol

least price on homeless

individuals. It suggests that

without managing alcohol

use and other complicated

issues, MUP is unlikely to

benefit this population at a

population level. This study

is particularly relevant for

people with alcohol use

disorder, as it highlights the

need for support services

and other interventions to

address their alcohol use

and other complex needs.

The study findings can

inform policymakers and

healthcare providers in

designing and implementing

interventions to reduce the

harm associated with

support to address alcohol

addiction and other

complicated issues. The

reliability of the authors'

results is increased by the

extensive qualitative

interviews they conducted

with stakeholders to learn

about their opinions and

experiences. The research

was carried out in line

with ethical principles,

and the authors are

reputable scholars with

knowledge of the subject.

This research adds to the

body of knowledge on

MUP and sheds light on

its possible effects on

homeless people and its

policy implications...

alcohol use disorder in this

population.
