Research Topic: Why do people still believe that war is an instrument of conflict resolution?

Primary scources:

Berdal, M. (2017). Building peace after war. Routledge.

This book looks into the efforts that governments as well as international organizations put in in trying to rebuild peace after war. Establishing a secure environment after war can be a challenging task according to the author and this is the main reason why nations and international organizations should do what it takes to prevent war from happening in the first place. Because the aftermath of war can span for years after the war ends. This book will be useful in answering the research question of whether war is truly an instrument of conflict resolution.

Coates, A. J. (2016). The ethics of war.

The book discusses the moral regulation of war. It’s limits and possibilities. It does so by giving examples of historical wars that took place. It details the tensions that exist between war and morality and discusses the idea of moral justification of war. I do not agree with the ideas presented in the book mainly because they insinuate that sometimes war is necessary for nations to prove a point. That states are free to go to war with other nations that threaten their sovereignty. I believe there are many other forms of conflict resolution aside of war.

Secondary Scources:

Detter, I. (2016). The law of war. Routledge.

The book outlines the rules that apply to the modern state of war. The modern treaties and laws that are meant to regulate how involved parties behave in the face of war. The author discusses how the laws of war have evolved over time and that things which were considered critical in warfare in the olden days do not necessarily matter in the modern times. International organizations therefore need to set international law to sets firm limits and clarify the rules that apply in time of conflicts, so as to prevent lawless behavior, including excesses and atrocities during war. The book is very necessary in determining whether all the challenges that come with war are worth it in trying to obtain peace.

Dinstein, Y. (2017). War, aggression and self-defense. Cambridge University Press.

This book focus on the international legal laws related to peace and war, and what is considered self-defense. It discusses the tendency of nations to place the blame on self-defense and collective security when aggression that leads to war occurs. When peace is threatened, people often respond with war. But this to me is counterproductive because either way the country will not know peace. The contents of this book will be useful in answering the research question of whether war is an instrument of conflict resolution.

Stroeken, K. (Ed.). (2011). War, technology, anthropology (Vol. 13). Berghahn Books.

This book explores the contribution of anthropology as a technology of war. The various forms in which anthropology influences warfare are discussed because it is clear that there are cultural components in war that cannot be ignored. The information in this book is very important in investigating the study topic.

Thompson, P. (2017). Peace and war: a theory of international relations. Routledge.

The book talks about the idea of nations using other modes of conflict resolution during tough times and even when the war is necessary, the harm caused should be as little as possible. Meditation should always be the first option and nations should always aim for a peaceful co-existence. The contents of this book will be useful in answering the research question and justifying the idea that war is not always needed for there to be peace.

Tolstoy, L. (2016). War and peace. Lulu. com.

The book covers the French invasion into Russia under Napoleon. It covers the adverse effects that this war had on the Russian society. The war affected all people right from the common person to the highly ranked leaders of Russia. From the book, we get to see that war does not end in any good way. There has to be mass destruction which a country can take years to recover from. Or probably never recover. This book will be useful in answering the research question of whether war is a necessary instrument of conflict resolution.

Van Creveld, M. (2010). Technology and war: From 2000 BC to the present. Simon and Schuster.

This book gives a timeline of the notable technological innovations that had a significant impact on warfare from the earliest times where people depended on handmade tools to the age of automation. The author reflects on technological advancements through time and explains how each period benefited from a certain technological innovation in war. This book is an important source in answering the research topic of whether Technology has increased or decreased safety in the world.
