Different types of War

War can be defined as an armed conflict that causes extreme violence, economic destruction, and social disruption. It is often prolonged and can be undertaken between political communities either by states or non-state actors. The thing that is interesting about war is the different types of war as well as the causes and consequences of each. Types of war include cold wars, colonial wars, insurgency wars, border war, Faultline war, invasion war, religious war, range war, proxy war, undeclared war, nuclear war, total war, and world war.

In ancient times, the war was mainly used by different political regions to gain sovereignty. Different periods approached war in different ways because of the evolution of technology which resulted in new weapons and tools of war. Nuclear wars, for example, make use of nuclear weaponry to inflict damage. The use of nuclear weapons in war is a result of technological advancements that were not possible before the 20th century. Technology shapes warfare just as much as warfare shapes technology. Some of the technological advancements that have shaped warfare over the years include airplanes, missiles, drones, tanks, computers, satellites, GPS among many others. Before the 20th century, air warfare was not possible because there were no airplanes.

The possible collections that can be used as primary sources for documenting the different types of war include a book by Detter (2016) titled “The law of war”, a book by Thompson (2017) titled “Peace and War: a theory of international relations”, and a book by Schwinghammer (2018) titled “Warfare since the second world war”.
