Picking your paper topic Choose an era of human history that we have or will cover in class (From the Ancient Greeks to 1648AD) - See the class schedule in the syllabus for a list of eras and units ERA Chosen: The Classical Greek Period (Greek Political Thought: Plato and Aristotle) Then pick one of the three "Great Questions" of the class

1. What should I believe? 2. How should I be governed? 3. Who is/ what makes a Virtuous citizen?

Your paper will then argue how the people of the era/civilization (Ancient Greek) answered the particular great question (How should I be governed?). All papers must carry a working thesis. This is not simply a report of different historical perspectives, but a careful analysis and synthesis of the research you conduct. B. The essay assignment will be broken into three stages. 1. Paper Proposal Due in Class Tuesday 9/18 Submit your chosen era (The Classical Greek Period) and the question you propose to answer (How should I be governed?). In addition, list three or more perspectives from that era that you will be consulting and a short annotation for each that includes: 1) the sources for that perspective you’ve used so far. 2) how that perspective helps contribute to the question (How should I be governed?). 2. Writing Sample and Bibliography Due in SafeAssign 10/28 11:59PM You will prepare two paragraphs of work totaling between 500 and 750 words in length. This will include an introductory paragraph and one body paragraph. You will include a bibliography demonstrating the sources you have used and will intend to use for your final paper. The bibliography does not count towards the word count. 3. Final Essay Due in SafeAssign AND hard copy in class Thursday 12/6 Your final essay will include a title page and bibliography. The essay itself should be no less than 2400 words and no more than 12 pages.

3. Correct use of historical facts and examples to further the argument - Paper does not give incorrect information, all facts serve the argument and are not used as mere

filler, historical context is maintained.

4. Mechanics and Grammar - No grammatical or spelling errors, proper formatting, formality of language.

5. Adheres to assignment instructions - Chicago Manual of Style, Word Count, etc.
