HSL 4240: Family Advocacy, Policy, and Law- Fall 2021
ADVOCACY PLAN: Parts I, II, III → 150 pts total
This assignment/project is in an individual project.
Part I: (Due by Sunday, Oct. 10 before 11:00 p.m.; 25 points) Outline and Sources for Advocacy Plan
1. Please select an issue that you would like to advocate for. It cannot be a general issue. You must narrow it down in your outline. For example, do not pick a topic such as the foster care system. This is MUCH TOO GENERAL. Your topic should focus on some sub-topic/issue of the foster care system such as separating biological siblings in separate foster homes, or aging out of the foster care system, or challenges of adoption among foster parents. If you need help narrowing down, please email me--- I am happy to help!
2. You will need to do some research and find 8 sources that you will use to inform your actual project. NOTE: the sources that you find must consist of the following:
i. 5 of the sources must be peer-reviewed, academic journal articles
ii. The other 3 sources can either be peer-reviewed academic journal articles OR government sources, reports from professional organizations, legal sources---such as legal cases, laws related to your topic, etc.
iii. Do actual RESEARCH. Do NOT simply grab the first sources/resources you find in your search. Because, you will be using these sources to write your advocacy plan.
iv. You may certainly use more than 8 sources (and are encouraged to do so). But at the time you turn in your outline and sources, you only have to include 8.
3. Your group is going to pretend that it is an organization that focuses on the problem that the group selected for this assignment. For example, if your group decided to focus on the problem of biological siblings placed with different foster families, you might call your organization, Siblings Fostered Together. Once you decide on a name for your organization, you will create a general outline for your Advocacy Plan based on the Advocacy Template that accompanies this assignment. Your outline should include the following parts:
I. What is the specific problem you are addressing?
II. What are the goals or objectives of your advocacy plan? (you must include 3-4 objectives in your outline)
III. Who are the target audiences and stakeholders? Who are your likely supporters and opponents for your advocacy plan?
IV. What is the message your organization is trying to convey?
TIP: The time and effort you put in to your outline and sources, the easier your advocacy plan will be to write and develop (and likely your final grade will be higher too).
Part II: (Due by Sunday, Nov. 21 before 11:00 p.m.; 75 points) Advocacy Plan.
· Your advocacy plan is not required to be extremely detailed. However, it should be comprehensive enough to show the reader that your objectives were well-thought out, and that you have a realistic plan for addressing those objectives.
· You must show evidence of using and integrating the sources you selected for this project. Information gained from these sources must be conveyed to the reader/audience.
· You must use correct APA formatting in your Advocacy Plan.
· Your written advocacy plan must contain the parts mentioned in the outline on page I of this handout. Your allocation of space for this plan should be as follows:
1. Introduction and objectives ~ 1 -2 pages double-spaced.
2. Statement of the problem and how it connects to family advocacy and policy ~2-3 pages (double spaced). This section is where the reader would expect to see many of the scholarly sources you used for the advocacy plan.
3. Your plan to address the problem (concrete and realistic ideas/strategies). You should be integrating information you learned in class and in the materials you gathered for this assignment. ~ 2-3 pages typed.
4. For “the message your organization is trying to convey” in relation to this issue and your desire to advocate for it, you will design an infographic with relevant data about your problem/issue, and your message about how to address it. You may use ppt, Piktochart or other program to create our Infographic.
5. Target Audience, Stakeholders, likely supporters and opponents of your proposed plan to address the issue. ~ 1-2 pages typed.
6. Reference page
Part III: (Due by Monday, Dec. 6th before 11:00 p.m.; 50 points) Advocacy Plan PowerPoint (This will be presented on Discussion #6).
· The PowerPoint should include picture, graphs, etc.
· Introduction (1-2 slides)
· Objectives (1 to 2 slides)
· Statement of the Problem (1 to 2 slides)
· You plan to address the problem (bullet points)
· Message your organization is trying to convey (bullet points)
· Target Audience, Stakeholders, Supporters/Opponents (bullet points)
· Reference Sheet
· You must use correct APA formatting in your Advocacy Plan.
