HSE-299 Week 6 Peer Responses

No less than 5 sentences, APA 6th edition citation

1. Ramada: The three terror organizations that I chose this week from chapter 5 is Army of Islam (AOI), Hezbollah, and Kahane Chai. The Army of Islam (AOI) was an extremist terrorist group operating primarily in the Gaza Strip. Active during the early 2000s until around 2018, AOI aimed to establish an Islamic state in Palestine, rejecting compromise with Israel. They carried out attacks such as suicide bombings, shootings, and rocket assaults against Israeli targets. AOI also engaged in internal conflicts with rival Palestinian factions. Led by figures like Mumtaz Dughmush, AOI enforced its strict interpretation of Sharia law and faced criticism for its treatment of women and suppression of dissent. After losing influence to Hamas in 2007, AOI's prominence diminished, and by 2018, the group had largely disbanded. Kahane Chai, also known as Kach, was a far-right extremist group founded by Rabbi Meir Kahane in the 1970s. The group advocated for Jewish supremacism and the expulsion of Arabs from Israel and the occupied territories. Kahane Chai engaged in violent acts, including bombings, shootings, and targeted assassinations against Palestinians and perceived enemies of their ideology. Due to their militant activities and radical views, Kahane Chai faced legal repercussions, resulting in bans and restrictions on their activities. While the organization's activities have significantly declined, remnants of Kahane Chai may still exist. Hezbollah, also known as Hizballah, is a Shia Islamist militant group based in Lebanon. Established in the early 1980s, Hezbollah has engaged in acts of terrorism targeting Israeli and Western interests. Their attacks have included bombings, kidnappings, and suicide bombings. With support from Iran, Hezbollah has evolved into a powerful paramilitary organization, involved in conflicts such as the fight against Israeli forces in Lebanon and supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the Syrian Civil War. Alongside their military activities, Hezbollah operates as a political party in Lebanon, holding seats in the parliament and participating in the government. The group is controversial, viewed as a legitimate resistance movement by some and as a terrorist organization by others.

Leonardo: From our reading of the terrorist organizations from Chapter 5, there were three groups that caught my attention of terrorsit organizations that I have never heard of The Shining Path, The Lashkar-e-Jhanghavi, and Aum Shrinkyo. The Shining Path is an insurgent group from Peru that was formed in 1980 by Abimael Guzman, and ever since his arrest in 1992 there activities have mostly been antigovernment operations to narcotrafficking (Nctc, nd). As well they refer themselves as since 2018 as "Militarized Communist Party of Peru"(Nctc, nd). The Aum Shrinkiyo is a Japanese Cult that combines tenets of Buddhism, Hinduism, and believes in an upcoming apocalypse, it is most well known for the 1995 Tokyo Subway chemical attacks (Fletcher, 2012). The Lashkar-e-Taiba is an military wing of the Pakistani Islamist organization of Markaz-ad-Dawa-wal-Irshad that has been operating since 1993 with ties to Pakistan Intelligence services and has been the organization for a series of terrorist attacks in India one infamous one where they killed 5 people in India's Sringar airport (Bajoria, 2010).
