Discussion 1: Compare and contrast the positions statements between the medical and physician groups.
Physicians and Nurses are part of the same industry; however, they hold similar and different views on a variety of issues that affect the field of medicine. The advent of computers and modern technology has brought about many changes and efficiencies in medicine. There is an array of equipment today in medicine such as the Magnetic Resonance Machines and Ultrasound. Hence, both nurse practitioners and physicians advocate the use of technology-known as telemedicine or telehealth (AANP, 2019). They both recognize that technology greatly enhances the provision of health care as long as it is regulated and used ethically.
The American College of Physicians likewise believes that technology allows them to provide high quality health care, reduce administrative burdens and improve patient-physician care (ACP, 2019). Nevertheless, physicians and nurse practitioners differ when it comes to medically assisted death. The American Association of Nurse Practitioners prohibits nurses form taking part in any type of intervention that will lead to the end of a patient (Stokes, 2017). On the other hand, the American College of Physicians allows physicians to participate in medically assisted death. Physicians can provide interventions that cause death to a patient suffering from an incurable or painful disorder.
The therapeutic use of marijuana in health care is another major issue affecting the field of medicine. Numerous studies have shown the benefits of the plant in alleviating symptoms in a variety of diseases such as cancer. Subsequently, nurse practitioners and physician support programs and initiates that advocate for continued research and establishment of evidence-based recommendations on how they can include cannabinoids in treatments and also in medical health curricula.
