Case Study 1

Tesla Motors Public Relations

Tesla Motors is an American company which involves the activities of designing and developing electric cars. This business organization is well recognized for its effective and efficient vehicle designs among other essential technological products like the lithium battery. It is also recognized for its effectiveness in leadership under its CEO Elon Musk. The organization has had a good image for all its brand, until recently when one of its vehicles caught fire after an accident.

Tesla Motors has manufactured a number of vehicle models. Among these models is the vehicle Model S, which is highly popular and well recognized by many people. An individual driving this model hit a certain metal object on a highway, which was believed to have fallen from another truck. The car instructed him to exit the vehicle and thus he exited the vehicle. The metal object punched a hole in the metal plate that was protecting the car. This aspect caused the vehicle battery to ignite and catch fire. The firefighters responded to this fire and punched more holes with the attempt to put out the fire. This attempt caused the fire to spread to the whole front section of the vehicle. Another individual viewed this scenario and recorded it, then posted the video to YouTube. The video went viral and caused a significant drop in Tesla Motors stock.

Since the occurrence of this incidence, Tesla Motors, being led by Elon Musk has been utilizing significant strategies to establish effective public relations. The CEO to this organization has answered numerous questions from the media and his customers regarding this incidence. He has also utilized social media like Facebook and Twitter to explain to the people why electric vehicles are safe for them to drive despite the occurrence of the incidence. It is through these strategies that Tesla Motors was not significantly and financially affected by this incidence (Popp, 2013).

Case Study 2

Target Company Security Breach

Target Corporation is an American retailer, which offers household among other products to its customers. It is the second largest retailer in the United States and has expanded its operations to other countries like Canada. This organization faced one of the largest data breach occurrences that have occurred in the United States, where the hackers acquired access to details of more than 70,000,000 debit and credit cards from the organizational customers.

The hackers had been planning on executing this data breach for some time. The organization had a secure security system which was completely capable of detecting any form of malware or abnormal network and cyber-related activities in the organizational system. This system sent a number of alerts to the main information technology center of the organization, but unfortunately, there was no response from the individuals tasked with the responsibility of monitoring the system and responding to such alerts. This minor mistake from the members of staff in Target organization led to the occurrence of one of the largest data breach occurrences in the American history.

After the occurrence of the attack, target faced significant challenges in its operation. The organization spends a significant amount of money compensating its customers who had been victims of this data breach simply because they shopped at the organizational stores. The number of sales that the organization was making also significantly dropped, mainly because after the breach most people did not feel safe shopping with the target. In order to restore its reputation, the organization utilized effective public relations strategies to convince the public that it was then safe to shop in its stores again (Marciano, 2013).
