Primary Post for #1 and #2

· Joann: What were the most compelling topics learned in this course?

This entire course was eye-opening. It is refreshing to know that employees have so many laws to protect them and ensure justice in sticky situations. I never realized there were so many laws. As a woman of a minority culture and veteran of the military, my favorite laws are EEO and FMLA. EEO is one of the laws that follow the employee from pre-recruitment throughout their career, so they are protected from discrimination for before being hired until leaving the company, and in some cases, even after. Having an act in place that keeps the employee employed if unforeseen sickness, disease or military calls to duty or even having a family happens during work occur can help save so many jobs and reduce the amount of time lost between jobs.

How did participating in discussions help your understanding of the subject matter? Is anything still unclear that could be clarified?

Participating in the discussion boards helped me as well. It helped me to see other’s points of view. While reading through other’s posts, I came across some information that I didn’t realize I had misunderstood or that I had gotten a greater understanding of. Having classmates to post about what I had written allowed me to see how my posts affected others and who agreed with my perceptions. It was a great environment to further discuss what was being taught.

What approaches could have yielded additional valuable information?

The discussion boards helped me to get a more well-rounded view of what was being discussed in the class. The individual projects tested what I had learned and applied it to real-life situations. When I study, I use many different methods of annotating the literature. I would have appreciated also if the option of InteliPath was available for this class. It is a shorter version of what is in the literature and helps me to retain information easier by being quizzed directly after reading the material, then being tested. Being afforded the opportunity to use SHRM.org in my assignments gave me a current expectation of human resources in the workplace and the live chats were a great environment to have more of person-to-person interaction in real-time (or as real as my time could be as I was scheduled to work during the live chats), and having them available for future reference also helped to study the material.

“In order to build a rewarding employee experience, you need to understand what matters most to your people.” – Julie Bevacqua

“According to The Predictive Index, This human resources quote, which comes from the CRO of Rise People, speaks to understanding what makes your employees tick. If you want to build a better company culture and working environment for your employees, go straight to the source and ask your people what they want and need. Schedule a 1:1 meeting, send a survey, or have a casual conversation. Use the insights you collect to move forward with the changes that matter most to your people.(Erin Balsa)”

What were the most compelling topics learned in this course?

The role that Human Resources play in a business or organization was very compelling to me. Understanding the different roles of Human Resources and their duties and responsibilities. I didn’t realize all their duties and responsibilities while still having to make sure they are using fairness with the employees and employer, and still following the code of ethics. Human Resources department is the connection between employees and the employer to make sure that everything in the company running perfectly.

How did participating in discussions help your understanding of the subject matter? Is anything still unclear that could be clarified?

Participating in the discussion board help me to understand the topics of the class more clearly. Been able to get opinions on topics from my fellow classmates help me look at a topic different or more clearly. So using the discussion board was very helpful with learn the topics to help me with my individual project and have more success with my individual projects. The discussion board reminds me of a meeting at work where we are able to exchange ideas and opinions to come up with the best results, and my fellow classmates help me to achieve this goal.

What approaches could have yielded additional valuable information?

I believe that this class did yield the best information. The instructor used great power points and gave the information that was need to be successful. The discussion board allowed us to be able to change opinions which is a great way to learn and understand a topic. I could have used the library resources more. But I believe all the information was great and allowed me to be successful in this class.
