HRM 547 Research Paper
This class examines a variety of performance management issues. You will pick a course related
topic to discuss, but one that is not specifically detailed in our text. You can choose a topic in the
text and expand on it. The objective is a detailed (but brief) exploration of a narrowly defined aspect
of Performance Management.
Examples to help guide you in choosing a topic include:
Performance Appraisal Problems
Ensuring Managers Have a Successful Appraisal
Performance Development Planning
Innovative Approach to Performance Management Employee Engagement Issues for a Certain Population (For example: identify a specific
group, such as millennials, those within 5 years of retirement, etc.)
You can be creative in choosing your topic and what you write about pertaining to this topic. You
might want to choose a topic that you are particularly interested in or have encountered outside of
this class.
Assume the reader (such as an undergraduate who has never taken a human resources course) knows
nothing about this topic and share your research on it. Depending on the topic, here are examples of
what you might specifically address:
Why is it important? What have you learned? What are the critical issues? What are the advantages and disadvantages of this? What is the impact on the Human Resources' function? What has been the shifting opinions surrounding this topic?
You have flexibility in the type of research paper you write. For example: your paper can be
informative (e.g. demonstrate your understanding of a topic, purely reflecting what information is
available), opinion related (e.g. taking a stance), problem solving (e.g. offering a solution), or any
combination.
The more specific you are, the better. Feel free to include examples that will strengthen or illustrate
your point.
Requirements
Must be at least 750 words in length and no more than 1250 words.
Note: If your paper is outside of this range, than you are either not detailed enough
and/ or your topic is too broad.
Not included in the word requirement that you should have:
A title page
A reference page with at least 4 sources or references in addition to our text book
Size 10 or 12 font of a type of your choosing (e.g. Times New Roman, Arial)
Double Spaced or 1.5 spacing with 1 inch margins all around
APA or similar format
