Chapter 3 and 5

8- Substantive post- 75-100 words each

Discussion 1

1) Discuss a time in your past when you were resistant to change. Why do you think you resisted?

2) I have to say internally I am sometimes resistant to change. I do not say anything to my coworkers when I feel this way because I realize that if I complain, it can cause division between people. I try to be positive and avoid any water cooler talk that comes up during a change. I investigate what a change will mean for myself and the organization and at times will look at the bright side of things. Every change I have been through always feels scary at first and once I learn how to accept the changes with proper training, I usually can do really well. The HR leader and manager can assist the corporation to make sure a plan of action is in place to include hiring, layoffs, training, and communication to everyone that the change will effect. It is imperative to retain talented workers while also obtaining new talent (Dessler 2017 pg.72). Change is inevitable and is often needed to remain competitive in the marketplace. . Respond?

3) The fact that we begin the second week talking strategy again, speaks to the importance of it. Dessler (2017) points per his model, that changes is a necessary dynamic of organizational growth. He speaks to the importance of conducing SWOTs (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, Threat) analysis and how leaders and HR has to use SWOTs to build and improve processes for customer satisfaction. The author also suggest that knowing the culture adds to how quickly or formal a change process will take place in a unit dependent on the experience of the people. Organizations will always have those who are resistant to change, and this is where the leaders of HR helps to make the change a little les challenging. Many times the resistance to change is simply a matter of providing more information.

“Change is inevitable. All organizations need to change to maintain relevance and to successfully adapt to varying external forces. Change is a challenge for those involved in it” (Oake, 2017). What the HR leaders role is, is to ensure that all have an opportunity to change to and to communicate the change right.

Discussion 2

1) Think of an organization that attempted to change, but failed.

Assess what went wrong and what could have been done differently to avoid the failure.

2) An organization that I feel attempted to change, but ultimately failed was Blockbuster. Blockbuster was a video-rental company was at its peak in 2004. The company did survive the change from VHS to DVD but failed to innovate into a market that allowed for delivery. What I mean by delivery would be considered streaming like the company Netflix and Amazon does. Blockbuster figured their physical stores were enough to please their customers. Because they had been the leader of the movie rental market for years, management did not see why they should change their strategy. In the year 2000, Netflix approached Blockbuster for a buyout deal, priced at $50 million dollars. Blockbuster refused. They were basically saying, “No thanks. That can’t work. Nobody wants a month-to-month subscription to have DVDs delivered to their door” (Siam Tek Web Design Group, 2012-2019). Netflix idea would have saved Blockbuster. In 2010 Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy and Netflix remains in business today. The company should have merged with Netflix because renovated themselves which appeal to their customers. With all the new technology advances, Netflix knew they had to make changes to their company so they would remain relevant and thrive. Respond?

3) One of the latest company failures that I can think of is the GM failure. The company was focused predominantly on profiting from financing vehicles, and in turn failed to keep up with the competition and improve the quality of their products. The company was able to get a bailout from the government, and they are now refocused on improving their products and trying to catch up with the competition. We have all seen the new advertisements all over the place and they dominate a lot of commercial time getting their products in front of the public eye predominately Chevy vehicles are what we see in all the commercials showing all the awards that they are winning to get the public to buy their brand. I have also seen the new introduction to the electric market which they seem to be behind in as well. Respond?

Discussion 3

1) Review this week’s course materials and learning activities, and reflect on your learning so far this

Respond to the following prompts in one to two paragraphs:

Provide citation and reference to the material(s) you discuss. Describe what you found interesting regarding this topic, and why.

Describe how you will apply that learning in your daily life, including your work life.

Describe what may be unclear to you, and what you would like to learn.

2) I found the section on succession planning to be the most interesting reading material for me this week. Succession planning is the ongoing process of systematically identifying, assessing, and developing organizational leadership to enhance performance (Dessler, 2017). Succession planning is when an organization ensures that employees are recruited and developed to fill each key role within the company. This ensures you that you will never have a key role open for which another employee is not prepared. Pursing succession planning ensures that employees are constantly developed to fill each needed role in your organization. As your organization expands, loses employees, provides promotional job opportunities and increases sales, your succession planning guarantees that you have employees on hand ready to fill the new roles.

This was beneficial to me because last year I move up to a manager position within my company. This allowed the company the ability to have a replacement employee ready in my old position because the company decided to promote me without the company having to worry about finding another replacement. Succession planning is beneficial because the employee’s values can be shared with the rest of the organization so that if an opportunity comes up, the managers can consider the employee to fill the role.
