HPR 232 Community Health Promotion Methods WK5-D1
HPR 232: Methods of Community Health Promotion Week 5 Guidance
Congratulations, we have reached Week Five! We will wrap up our studies by taking a look at advocacy and policy. Health educators are strong proponents of advocacy, and they use various outlets in order to affect legislation as well as policies. We will also look at the strategies used for successful legislative advocacy and the skills necessary for media advocacy that can influence policy. Your final is a comprehensive exam that encompasses everything you learned throughout these past five weeks. You will want to review all of your resources from the entire course to prepare for your final.

Policy and Advocacy |
Your discussion this week focuses on advocacy and policy. A policy is a plan that determines decisions, for example, foreign policy makes decisions regarding politics, economics, etc. Can you think of different types of policies? What about a life insurance policy? What decisions does that make? Advocacy is how health educators change policies. Health advocacy, therefore, is pushing for changes in health policies whether through legislation or simply communicating to persons with the power to change these policies. Can you think of examples of where this push has happened in the health arena? Were policies changed? Think of the Affordable Care Act or “Obama Care” as it is affectionately called :).

The ACA provides access to healthcare for many Americans who would otherwise be neglected due to a lack of health insurance. Another example is the Mothers Against Drunk Driving or M.A.D.D., which is an advocacy campaign that has made great strides in changing policies and laws related to drunk driving.
For this discussion post you are required to identify one federal legislator from your state to write to. Please note that you are to choose a legislator from YOUR state. You will write a letter to this legislator regarding one of the issues listed in the directions. Be mindful to follow the instructions provided for this discussion post. For example, please note that you need to reference major statistics within your letter from research you find. You are advised to consider this an official letter that can be sent to your legislator and not just a letter for an assignment. Your letter may be instrumental in advocating for a significant change.
Please note that there are two parts to this assignment.
