Ok, now we are talking! Literally. For your first discussion you will be completing a three-to-five minute video presentation for the next city council meeting in your community. The aim of this presentation is to explain the benefits of becoming a Let’s Move! city and to apply for that status. Please note that a minimum of four slides is required for this presentation. You are also required to use Jing (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. , Screencast-o-Matic (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. , or any alternative software that utilizes the leadership skills and traits of professionalism that you must possess for giving presentations as a health educator. In this presentation you will be verbally demonstrating the qualities of an effective leader in a short amount of time. Therefore, while there may seem to be a need to be overly dramatic or to emote in order to compensate for the fact that you do not have the benefit of being seen, you will only be graded on how well you can demonstrate the qualities of an effective leader in the time allowed. In this instance, verbose is not the way to go. Remember to be creative and practice, practice, practice! Think of this as a professional exercise…you need to keep your audience engaged and you need to sound like you know what you are talking about.
Therefore, no PPT presentations will be accepted for any reason.
For additional assistance with this presentation, here is a video about the right way to create and deliver a PowerPoint presentation. Remember that you will be using a screencast program to record your PPT presentation...sort of a mini movie.

Qualities of Good Leaders

The assignment this week asks you to examine what qualities constitute a good leader. First, you must know ‘why’ we are asking you to examine the qualities of good leaders as it relates to health education. The reason why is somewhat simple, as a health educator you will become a leader of coalitions, support groups, implementation teams, etc. This means that if you know the qualities of great leaders you can begin to build those within yourself so that you can be effective in your career.
I personally have many role models that are great leaders, but I have never really thought about ranking them. They all have many great leadership qualities, and no two leaders are exactly the same so choosing a favorite is definitely hard. There are so many to choose from…for example, Mahatma Gandhi (Mohandas Gandhi) was revolutionary in fighting for freedom in India, Steve Jobs was a pioneer in technological advances, Princess Diana worked tirelessly to improve the health and welfare of children all over the world, and Sir Alex Ferguson has lead Manchester United to 13 Premier League titles in his amazing career. To avoid conflicts I will not discuss my favorite leader, as that may skew your discussions and I want you to be able to give your own undiluted opinions. Can you think of someone that inspires you with their leadership skills? Is it someone famous or someone in your community? Is it someone in your family or in your workplace? What makes them a good leader? Better yet, what about them made you choose them as not just a good leader, but your favorite leader?
An additional resource that may be useful is from our Forbes School of Business here at Ashford: Ten Qualities of Effective Leaders (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. at http://www.forbes.com/sites/tanyaprive/2012/12/19/top-10-qualities-that-make-a-great-leader/#44fffe235648
Take the time to review the nine leadership qualities outlined in the readings for this week and ensure that you appropriately denote them when discussing your favorite leader and how you could utilize these qualities in your career in health education. Please follow the instructions on how you are to submit this assignment.
