How Do I Find Peer Reviewed Journal Articles?

Canada College library offers many database search websites that you can access on campus or off. You will need to obtain a library card by applying at the Library front desk. If you need additional help, ask the library staff to assist you. For contact information for library staff click this link.http://www.canadacollege.edu/library/contactus.php. As an online student, if you are unable to come to campus contact library staff for assistance Follow the steps listed below to find “peer reviewed” articles.

STEPS TO FIND JOURNAL ARTICLES

• Go to http://www.canadacollege.edu/library/subjectguides/psychology.php

•

Click “JSTOR” or " Psychology & Behavior Sciences Collection", or any other database that has peer reviewed journal articles. If you are off campus, you have to enter your library card number. This is the number on the back of any Peninsula Library System library card.

• Click “Advanced Search.”

• Type in your search terms.

For examples:

gender and communication and dating

sports and race

adolescent* and drug* and peer pressure

preschool and play and socialization

(* = “show everything with this root”, for example adolescent* = adolescent, adolescents, adolescence)

• Check these 2 boxes:

to documents with full text

to peer-reviewed publications

Type “psychology” in the “By publication subject”.

Click search.

• If you want to e-mail articles to yourself (which I recommend!), do so.

• If you want to print, use the print preview. • Tips: note page numbers. You probably don’t want an article that is one to 5 pages long. • Read the abstract (summary) over and over. These articles are tough, so you really want to

grasp the summary. • Ask yourself: Is this what I need? If you need a research article, does it have a Methods

section? Did the authors really do research? For example, did they interview 42 kids on a playground? Did they observe 20 college women trying to quit smoking? Did they give a survey to 500 high school freshman on the topic of AIDS awareness? Or is it a “how to” piece (for example, a 4 page article giving counselors tips on avoiding sexism)? Or is it an editorial (for example, a psychologist urging the reader to give more attention to their patients’ nutrition and exercise)?

• Ask for help from your librarians! • Start reading, but never despair. These articles are tough, tough, tough. Read, re-read, skip,

go back, in other words—wrestle with the text!

Scholarly Journals vs. Magazines

Your assignment requires that you use a journal article that is scholarly and peer-reviewed instead of magazines or informational websites. If you are not sure you are looking at a journal, magazine or informational website when completing an online database search?
