Hello, this is a video to describe what a resource file is, so resource file number one details is located in canvas, as you can see on the screen, and you can access lots of information related to that. I'm going to go to the resource file description. So the resource file description is going to give you a description of this assignment, and so what you will do is you will be doing three resource files and those resource files will then be all put together at the end of the semester to make your exceptionality resource file. So let's take a look at what a resource file is, so a resource file is something that you'll do on your computer and it's going to include information about one disability that you choose. And we'll talk about that in a few minutes. So the reason for this assignment is, according to the Texas Education Agency, that's TEA, about 11 percent or about two or three children in a class of 20 of students in the 2020-2021 school year received special education services. So those numbers, they tell you that in your career of educating young children that you will work with children who have one type of disability or another in your career. So that being the case and the goal of this assignment is for you to understand specific details about a child with a specific disability. And so the hope is that the skills that you acquire by completing this assignment, you can then generalize or roll over into...Let's say you have a child in your class that has a disability, that you haven't research for this class down the road, then you know where to get the information, where to find resources. And you've got that foundation of knowledge. So we've talked before about NAEYC and NAEYC has two standards that are addressed in this assignment. One is you will know and you will understand what are the different influences on a child's development and learning. And then you'll also known understand what are some of the family's characteristics of children who have a disability. So let's take a look at the instructions. So we've got nine points here. And so, first of all, in canvas, you'll view the resource file number one module. And so that will have all of the information that you need for a resource file, number one or part one. So I will use number one and part one interchangeably. So the four items you'll look at are the description, the example, the grading rubric and the template. So when you look at those items and the description is what we're looking at here. All of the information that you need for completing this assignment will be within that module. So, number two, what are the requirements for formatting? How do I want you to format this and set it up? I'd like for you to use APA style for your citations and for your works cited page, size 11 font and one and a half spacing. Now, having said that, this is not going to be a typical writing paragraphs in essay type of assignment. So I'll show you the template in just a few minutes and that will make more sense. So, number three, you're going to choose a disability. I encourage you to choose a disability that maybe you want to know more about. Maybe you have had a student or a friend or you've encountered somebody in your life who had, let's say, cerebral palsy and you want to know more about that. So choose that. Or if there's a disability that, you know, you just want to search a rare disability and you come up with one that you've never heard of or haven't been aware of, that maybe that might be where you start. So you can use your textbook. You can also look under the resource file module in canvas and there's a link that has a list of acceptable disabilities. And if you come across one and you're not sure, you know, I don't know if I can use this or not, just send me an email, drop me that and we'll we'll talk about it through email or set up a meeting. And that way you'll know if you're on track or not. So number four your research that disability and find out all of the information you can about it. And you'll take that information that you've found in your research and you'll complete the template. And I'll show you that in just a moment. Be sure to cite your sources. So, for example, if you search and your disability that you're focusing on is fragile X syndrome, then, you know, if you don't know about that disability to begin with and everything that you come across is going to be something that you found somewhere else based on someone else's research or knowledge. So if you find that the causes are genetic, then that would need to be something that you are giving credit to that source where you found that information. And number seven is make sure you submit your resource file part one by the due date. The due date for this is on day six. So all of the modules and lessons up to that point will help guide you through this assignment for a resource file part one. Once you submit resource file part one, what you will do is you'll wait to get your feedback and grade for me and then any changes that I suggest or recommend, take a look at those and make those changes and reach out to me if you have questions. And so I really want it to be a working document and you won't submit it a second time for a grade for each part. But what you will do is by making those recommended changes, then you will combine one, two and three parts at the end of this semester and that will be submitted as your exceptionality resource file. So having said that, it's superimportant to save everything, figure out a way to be organized, whether that is setting up folders on your computer, if you're a paper kind of person than you are you have a folder, you have a notebook, whatever it is that you need to be organized and save everything. This will be submitted through canvas. So, you know, it will be a typewritten assignment that will be completed on the template. So let's take a look at the template now. I'm going to go out of the description. And. I think I need to go next. All right, I'm going to go back out to modules, and so here's the link to the list of acceptable disabilities and you can take a look at that. And then we have the description, an example, and in the grading rubric and the template. So let's take a look at the template. All right, so this is the first time I've used a template for this assignment in this class, so my hope is it's more user friendly and that it helps students know exactly what you know, what I'm asking for and what the expectations are. So this assignment is worth forty two points. And so if you take a look. On the left hand side, the first column that those columns are that column is for the description for each section. So number one, the disability name, type and category. And then I have that NAEYC standard there. And then the task to complete is on the right hand side, so. Description on the left and what you will actually be doing is on the right. So on the first column ... on the first row right hand side column disability. So you'll have the name of the disability, what's the type and what's the category. And that'll make more sense as you go through these first few modules in the course. And then optional is providing a photo or a drawing that shows the disability or the exceptionality in the box. So anything that is optional in the rows, if you do that and it meets expectations for for when it's asking you to do for that optional piece, then that can earn you exceeds expectations on the grading rubrics. So that can earn you the maximum points. For those of you who strive to earn maximum points and get the highest grades you can, that's a little piece of information for you to know. So this has one, two, three, four, five sections and so each section has specific information that you are looking for related to one disability, so let's say that you choose autism spectrum disorder, then you will look up information about the disability name, type and category. You will also then find out what are some causes, what what is the statistical data? In other words, how many children in the United States or how many children in the world have been diagnosed with having autism spectrum disorder? And just a little side note for the statistical data. We're looking for information about children. We're not looking for adults or people which would include children and adults. We're looking for children since this is a class about children. And and and so that's our focus. So then we're also looking at treatments and therapies. So you'll name and discuss a combination of at least four traditional and alternative treatments or therapies. You know, we have traditional therapies that we all are familiar with and we've heard about. But there are also some alternative treatments related to diet and certain eating or oils or certain types of treatments that aren't typically sought after. So then we also have, you know, how is the child's development impacted? And so this gives you a chance to look at those five developmental domains that you should be familiar with from your other child development courses. And then you also look at what are the implications on the family members, how our family members impacted, how, ah, how do they struggle and what are some positive impacts as well? So I want to talk a little bit about this template so this template is not saved in PDF format, this template is, you know, a working document. So in other words, when you type something in, it's going to put more spaces. So as you are working through this, you know, make sure that you've got it, that it stays organized and that I can tell what section goes with, what tasks go with what section and that type of thing. So keep everything for No one and that row and number two in that row and so on. So as you work through this template, you'll want to save it. You might want to even enlarge some of these boxes if you do the optional tasks so that the information, let's say, if on causes and statistical data, if you include a table there and it needs to be enlarged for me to be able to read it, then make sure that you do that. I would appreciate that, since my eyes are not always my best friend. So I'm going to go out of the template. And I'm going to go. To. Let me see. OK, to the grading rubric, so the grading rubric, if you've never heard the word rubric before, what a rubric is, is it allows students to be able to look at what's expected on an assignment and it allows the instructor to be able to grade fairly from student to student. So when you look at this rubric, it matches the parts of the assignment identically. So when I talked about if you do the optional parts of the assignment, so if you look at the one, two, three, the middle column where it says it meets expectations, anything going all the way down, that will get you the point that meets expectations. If you're a student who strives to earn more than meets expectations and you want maximum points, then you want to look on this left hand column that says exceeds expectations. And so that's where we have those additional optional tasks to do for this assignment. So I have the first section at number one, the maximum points are four. And you can see in green that it has maximum points. So the maximum points are in green for each row and. Let's see, it's four for the first row, and I think most of the rows are eight until you get down to the citations and professional communication. So those are both worth three points. So a total of forty two points, so. I hope that this is an assignment that you are able to learn about a disability that that you want to know more about, and I hope that it gives you the skills to be able to research and at other disabilities that you might come across in your future that you want to know and learn more about. So access your course calendar for specific due date, although it is day six, I don't know the exact date, but it's day six. So let me know if you have any questions.
