How to Choose an Argumentative Essay Topic?

You may think that it is really easy to just pick an argumentative topic to write an essay on. However,

the topic should be chosen with care and consideration. You have to keep in mind that your

argumentative essay should be compelling. It should entice the reader to keep on reading. And it

should move your reader so much that they have no choice but to agree with your arguments and

logic.

When choosing a topic try to keep the following in mind:

1. Write what you know. This should be obvious, but you should have some background

knowledge in a topic at this point in your life. You must be able to think, analyze, and discuss

your topic without using the internet or out-side sources. In short, this means that you should

choose a topic that you are already well-informed about. From your own knowledge, you

should also be able to demonstrate that there are certain valid ideas on the topic via “your

own” points, explanations, and evidence. Even if you have to research, you will know where

to start in your research this way.

2. Make sure you topic is something specific. When you are arguing, do not take something

super broad, such as should we have school uniforms, or should abortion be illegal. If your

stance on the issue can be boiled down to a 'yes' or a 'no' then likely, you will have too much

to talk about, or not enough! It is best to have a clear, specific statement that is arguing.

3. Make sure that there is something that can be defended in your position, If you cannot think

of defenses to the counterarguments an opponent of yours is certain to make, and then

maybe you should rethink your topic. On the other hand, if your opponent is a straw man or

any other way of thinking about the issue is obviously wrong, then you are not writing an

argument, you are writing an exposition.

4. Choose an argument those appeals to both logic and emotion. This allows your reader to

connect with what you are trying to say. People rarely actually argue rationally, so the only

way to really change anyone's mind is to get them it invest emotionally into your argument,

what you are saying, and what you are trying to accomplish. Of course, you will need solidly

rational arguments in your essay, but you may have a problem if you try to pick a topic that

does not arouse any feeling.
