ROLEPLAY: How to Accept (and Decline) a Job Offer
After you decide which job you would like to take, the work isn’t done. It’s time to go through the process of accepting the job.
You must remember that you have a professional reputation to maintain, and how you respond to your new employer (and the companies you’re rejecting) will impact how you are viewed. Doing it the right way can allow you to keep doors open and maintain valuable relationships, while doing it the wrong way can hurt you down the road when you’re looking to make your next job move.
Part I: Guided Reading
This article, How to Accept and Decline Job Offers from LifeHacker, explores this situation in depth. Answer the questions below as you read through the article. When you are answering the questions, write the responses in your own words, in a way that demonstrates you understand the concept; do NOT just copy verbatim from the text.
Deciding to Accept or Decline
1. What are three reasons you might decide to decline a job offer?
|
1. When terms to the offers are not favorable such as low compensation. 2. Unfavorable working environment such as working without compensation, neglect of the hygiene by the firm and lack of safe and healthy working environment. 3. When many aspects of the offered job does not meet or not ideal with my job description. |
How to Accept an Offer
2. What are the two mediums you should use to accept a job offer?
|
The first medium of accepting the job offer is verbally. This may happen after interview and negotiation and I am physically available when offer is being presented. Second, I can accept offer on the paper. |
3. What must you ensure about your offer letter before sending it in? Why is that important?
|
I should ensure that it contains the most up to date terms of the employment based on the negotiations I have done. This is critically important because it confirms that offer letter that I am signing is the correct one and contains details of what I had negotiated and there is no possibility of being conned or being subjected to different terms other than the one that I am aware about. |
4. Why do you think it’s important to inform everyone who played a part in the hiring process that you accepted your offer, not just your main point of contact?
|
It is important to inform everyone who played part in the hiring process because this is show of the appreciation to them for sacrificially giving themselves and giving hand in either recommending me for the job, negotiating the offer and helping in responding to the questions. Additionally, acknowledging their efforts makes them open and ready to help in future and walk with me in the path of the success. Finally, it will be an opportunity to inform them that I have accepted the offer, express my excitement for having joined the organization and seek any further advice that I may need from them. |
How to Decline an Offer
5. How can declining a job offer turn into a positive as a professional?
|
In the event that I learn that there are aspect of the job or organization are good fit for me such as case where organization is alleged to engage in unethical business practices. Second, in the instance when there is a competing offer that is better than one I have chosen to decline. |
Declining Because It’s Not a Good Fit
6. When should you ideally send a response to a company you’re declining an offer from?
|
I should send a response to a company I am declining an offer from the moment I have taken another competing offer or I have made my mind not to accept. It is not considered not etiquette to delay communicating while already one has decided not to take the offer. |
7. Why would saying “I didn’t think your organization would’ve been a good fit for me. I wasn’t excited about the offer.” be a BAD way to decline a job offer?
|
This is not professional way of the declining the job offer. One ought first to express appreciation to the firm because of the offer extended to him/her. Inform firm that you are declining the offer and provide genuine reason for turning down the offer. Then let the firm know that you would like to be connected to them and also offer to help the firm where it may need your assistance. |
Declining Because of a Non-Negotiable Offer
8. What are the two possible outcomes when you tell an employer you’re declining their job offer because it was non-negotiable?
|
If the decline is based on the non-negotiable offer, firm may accept the reason provided and move while in other cases, firm may opt to provide an opportunity for negotiating the offer. |
9. If there is a follow-up conversation, when should it happen? Why is that the best time?
|
It should happen at the time that person to whom the job offer is made reschedules with the point of the contact. This is important because it allows one to prepare for the discussion and respond fully to the questions that may be raised during the time of the negotiations. |
Wrap-Up
10. Why is it so important to leave every company or employer feel that their time was well spent considering you for a position?
|
It is so important to leave every company or employer feel that their time was well spent considering you for a position because in future you may need the connections of the same company or employer. For example, company may grow and decide to feel particular position that I feel I am competent and offers provided are commensurate with my expectation. In such case, the kind of relationship that I established with the company initially when they had made an offer for me will matter a lot. |

*Note: It does not matter what exactly the companies do. Feel free to pick real companies, or create fictional companies. The point of this activity is about your approach and tone in dealing with accepting and declining job offers
**Note: The LifeHacker article provides templates for how your responses should look. DO NOT copy those responses exactly. You should keep the main points the same, but please put your responses into your own words.

Your first task is to notify the company that you are deciding to work for.
11. First, you must call your main point of contact. Below, write a script for what you would say to them when you call them on the phone.

Now you must notify the two companies whose offers you are deciding to decline.
14. The first company you are notifying gave you a non-negotiable offer. You were hoping they would change some of the terms of their offer, but they did not. Write a script for what you would say to your main point of contact informing them that you are declining their offer.
|
Script You : Hello, I am Corey Stephen whom you had made job offer for the administrative Assistant. I wish to express my gratitude for having offered me an opportunity of administrative assistant with Impact Generations. Subject: Appreciation for help in hiring process |
|
Hello Ann, I trust you are doing well. I am writing to inform you that I have decided to decline job offered to me for administrative assistant with Cortex Limited. I finally made up my mind to decline the offer after realizing that job offer was not good fit for me in sense that the firm three days ago was alleged to participate in unethical business practices which is a total mismatch with my job description and ethics. However, I wish to appreciate you for role that you played to ensure that I successfully made through the hiring process to the point of the job offer.
